The Commission for Social Development wrapped up its 2025 annual session today, presenting four key resolutions to the Economic and Social Council for adoption. This session emphasized the urgent need to tackle systemic challenges such as poverty, hunger, and social exclusion. Krzysztof Maria Szczerski, the Chair of the Commission from Poland, highlighted the importance of gender equality, human rights, and social cohesion in his closing remarks. He stressed that equitable access to health, education, decent work, and housing is essential for building just and inclusive societies.
As the world prepares for the second World Summit for Social Development in November in Doha, there is a renewed call to reset global priorities. Szczerski urged for structural reforms to promote quality employment, eliminate barriers to technology, and create resilient social protection systems. The resolutions approved during this session aim to address these pressing issues and set a course for future actions.
Key Resolutions Approved
The Commission approved several draft resolutions aimed at advancing social development. One significant resolution is titled “Future organization and methods of work of the Commission for Social Development” (document E/CN.5/2025/L.7). This resolution establishes the priority theme for the sixty-fourth session of the Commission, focusing on “Advancing social development and social justice through coordinated, equitable, and inclusive policies.” This theme will guide the Commission’s work and its contributions to the Economic and Social Council.
Another important resolution is the “Social dimensions of the New Partnership for Africaโs Development” (document E/CN.5/2025/L.5). This resolution recognizes the New Partnership for Africaโs Development as a cornerstone for development across the continent. It urges African governments to expedite the implementation of the revised Africa Health Strategy for 2016โ2030, emphasizing the need to improve maternal and child health. Furthermore, it encourages member states to provide capacity-building support to African nations in water and sanitation-related initiatives, while also calling for accelerated actions to eradicate extreme poverty and tackle climate change.
Strengthening Social Inclusion and Solidarity
The Commission also approved the resolution “Strengthening solidarity, social inclusion, and social cohesion to accelerate the delivery of the commitments of the Copenhagen Declaration on Social Development” (document E/CN.5/2025/L.4). This resolution highlights the necessity of international cooperation to provide financial assistance and technical support to developing countries. It reaffirms that eradicating poverty in all its forms remains the greatest global challenge. The resolution encourages states to invest in programs that promote equitable access to basic services, including healthcare, education, safe drinking water, and affordable housing.
By fostering social inclusion and solidarity, the Commission aims to create a more equitable world. The resolution calls for a collective effort to ensure that all individuals, regardless of their background, have access to the resources and opportunities they need to thrive. This commitment to social cohesion is vital for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and ensuring that no one is left behind.
Focus on Youth Engagement
Another significant resolution adopted during the session is “Policies and programmes involving youth” (document E/CN.5/2025/L.3). This resolution emphasizes the importance of addressing youth issues in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It calls on states to promote the full and effective participation of young people and youth-led organizations in decision-making processes.
The resolution also urges donors to contribute to the United Nations Youth Fund, which supports the participation of youth representatives from developing countries in UN activities. It highlights the need for greater geographical and gender balance in youth representation. By prioritizing youth engagement, the Commission aims to empower the next generation and ensure their voices are heard in shaping policies that affect their lives.
