Coldplay’s Concerts in Ahmedabad Yield Significant Revenue

British rock band Coldplay’s recent concerts in Ahmedabad have made a significant economic impact, generating an estimated Rs 641 crore overall. The two-night event, part of their ‘Music of the Spheres’ tour, not only boosted the local economy by Rs 392 crore but also highlighted the growing potential of India’s live entertainment sector. With a remarkable turnout of over 250,000 attendees, including a large number of visitors from outside the city, the concerts have set a new benchmark for mega-events in India.

Economic Boost from Concerts

The concerts held at the Narendra Modi Stadium on January 25 and 26 have been hailed as India’s largest live entertainment spectacle. According to a report by EY-Parthenon and BookMyShow Live, the event significantly contributed to various sectors, including local infrastructure, hospitality, and cultural tourism. A staggering 86% of attendees traveled from outside Ahmedabad, leading to increased spending on hotels, transportation, dining, and retail. The event also generated Rs 72 crore in Goods and Services Tax (GST) revenue for the Government of India, underscoring the fiscal strength of the live entertainment industry.

Raghav Anand, a partner at EY-Parthenon, noted the dynamic growth of India’s live entertainment sector, which is projected to exceed Rs 12,000 crore by 2024. He emphasized that consumer spending is driving this transformative journey, indicating a bright future for live events in the country.

Prime Minister’s Endorsement

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has publicly endorsed the concert economy, referencing Coldplay’s performances in his address at the Utkarsh Odisha – Make in Odisha Conclave 2025. He highlighted the vast opportunities for the concert economy in India, given the country’s rich heritage in music and storytelling. Modi pointed out that the demand for live events has surged over the past decade, showcasing the potential for growth in this sector.

The Prime Minister’s remarks reflect a broader recognition of the importance of live entertainment in enhancing cultural tourism and economic development. His support reinforces the idea that events like Coldplay’s concerts can play a crucial role in promoting India’s vibrant cultural landscape.

City Branding and Infrastructure Development

The Coldplay concerts have also catalyzed a shift in Ahmedabad’s branding, establishing it as a new hub for mega-events. Jay Shah, chair of the Indian Cricket Council (ICC), remarked on the significance of the concerts, stating that Ahmedabad has now become an epicenter for both sporting and entertainment events. The shows attracted over 250,000 visitors, with more than 170,000 coming from outside Gujarat, marking a historic moment for the city.

Shah described the event as a “proud moment for India,” noting that Coldplay’s concert recorded an attendance of 134,000, the largest for the band to date. This achievement not only highlights the scale of the event but also sets a precedent for future concerts and large-scale gatherings in the region.

Fan Reactions and Event Execution

Fans and officials alike celebrated the seamless execution of the Coldplay concerts, which have been described as a monumental success. The band expressed their gratitude on social media, calling the event their “biggest ever concert” and describing the experience as “totally mind-blowing.” The positive feedback from attendees and the smooth organization of the event have contributed to a sense of pride within the local community.

The success of the Coldplay concerts in Ahmedabad serves as a testament to the growing appetite for live entertainment in India. As the country continues to embrace large-scale events, the potential for economic growth and cultural exchange remains vast, paving the way for more international artists to perform in the region.
