In 2023-24, the Ministry of Coal wants to produce more than a billion tons of coal.  To accomplish this goal, the Coal Secretary conducted an in-depth review of all coal companies. It has been decided to fix a 780  Million Ton (MT) target for CIL, 75 MT for Singareni Collieries Company Ltd, and 162 MT for captive and commercial mines. A total of 290 mines are operational in CIL, out of which 97 mines produce more than one MT per year.

Coal Production Touches 607.97 Million Ton During April-December 2022

All 97 coal mines have been discussed and a time frame assigned to issues of land acquisition, forest clearance, environmental clearance, rail connectivity, and road connectivity. Despite continued efforts by coal companies, out of 97 coal mines, 56 have no pending issues. Only 41 mines have 61 issues, for which continued coordination and monitoring are being carried out by top management of coal companies with the State Govt. authorities concerned and the Central Ministries.

CIL produced 622 MT in the year 2021-22, and in the year 2022-23, it produced 513 MT, with a growth of more than 16%. It is expected that CIL will surpass the target of 700 MT fixed for the current fiscal and accordingly will achieve 780 MT for the year 2023-24.
