Coal India Limited Marks 50 Years of Service to the Nation

Coal India Limited (CIL), a prominent Maharatna Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Coal, is celebrating a significant milestone as it marks 50 years since its establishment on November 1, 1975. As it embarks on its 51st year, CIL has grown to become one of the largest corporate employers in India, with a workforce exceeding 220,000. Over the past five decades, the company has dramatically increased its coal production and supply, reflecting its vital role in the nation’s energy sector.
Remarkable Growth in Production and Supply
CIL’s production has surged nearly tenfold since its inception, rising from 79 million tonnes (MT) in 1975 to an impressive 781 MT by the end of the fiscal year 2025. This remarkable growth is mirrored in coal supplies, which increased from 78 MT to 763 MT during the same period. Notably, the last decade has seen the most rapid expansion, with production jumping from 494 MT in FY 2014-15 to 781 MT in FY 2024-25, accounting for approximately 41% of the total increase over the 50 years. Similarly, coal off-take rose by 40% during this time, showcasing CIL’s pivotal role in meeting the country’s energy demands.
A senior executive at CIL emphasized the significance of this achievement, noting that the company contributes to 75% of India’s total coal output. This underscores CIL’s commitment to enhancing coal production and supporting the government’s initiatives to elevate the sector’s performance.
Leadership Transition and Future Plans
CIL’s foundation day this year coincided with a leadership transition as Shri P M Prasad stepped down as Chairman upon reaching superannuation. Shri Sanoj Kumar Jha, Additional Secretary in the Ministry of Coal, has taken on the additional responsibilities of Chairman until a new appointee is confirmed. Shri B Sairam, the current CMD of Northern Coalfields Limited, has been selected for the Chairman position but has yet to assume office.
Looking ahead, CIL is diversifying its operations beyond coal mining. The company plans to establish solar power plants with a capacity of 3,000 MW by FY 2028, alongside ventures in critical mineral acquisitions and coal gasification. CIL has also formed a joint venture with Hindustan Urvarak Rasayan Limited (HURL) to develop three mega fertilizer plants, which have already begun generating profits. This diversification strategy aims to enhance CIL’s sustainability and profitability in the evolving energy landscape.
Commitment to Workers’ Welfare
In a bid to strengthen social security for its workforce, CIL has introduced a new draft legislation titled the “Coal Mines Employees’ Provident Fund and Miscellaneous Provisions Bill, 2025.” This initiative seeks to enhance pensionary benefits for coal mine workers. Additionally, the company has increased the ex gratia payment for fatalities resulting from mine accidents from ₹15 lakh to ₹25 lakh, benefiting both regular and contract workers under its “We Care” initiative.
Furthermore, regular employees will receive an additional personal accident insurance cover of ₹1 crore, while contract workers will now be covered by a ₹40 lakh insurance policy for the first time, with no premium required. CIL has also committed to corporate social responsibility, spending ₹6,149 crores over the last decade, which is 26% higher than the statutory requirement. The company’s flagship CSR initiative, the Thalassemia Bal Sewa Yojana, has provided financial aid for the treatment of over 800 children suffering from thalassemia and aplastic anemia.
