Coal India Launches New CSR Initiatives to Transform Lives
The Ministry of Coal and Coal India Limited (CIL) marked a significant milestone today by celebrating important achievements in its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, specifically the Thalassemia Bal Sewa Yojana (TBSY) and Nanha Sa Dil. The announcement was made at a gathering in New Delhi, attended by prominent figures including Shri G. Kishan Reddy, Union Minister for Coal and Mines, and Shri Satish Chandra Dubey, Union Minister of State for Coal and Mines.
The Thalassemia Bal Sewa Yojana aims to address the treatment needs of children suffering from Thalassemia and Aplastic Anaemia, both rare genetic blood disorders. Initially, the program began with just four hospitals and has since expanded to include a network of 21 empanelled hospitals across the nation. CIL stands out as the sole public sector enterprise in India to undertake such a comprehensive health initiative for these conditions. Under TBSY, up to Rs. 10 lakh per patient is provided to empanelled hospitals for Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT), contributing to a considerable total of Rs. 130 crore across four phases. As of now, more than 1,050 BMTs have been completed, enabling many treated children to lead healthy lives. The initiative collaborates closely with Thalassemics India, with oversight from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
Nanha Sa Dil Initiative
Another key initiative, Nanha Sa Dil, focuses on addressing Congenital Heart Defects (CHD), which impact approximately 2.4 lakh newborns in India each year. Tragically, only about 5 percent of these infants receive the timely treatment they require. Launched in collaboration with the Sri Sathya Sai Health and Education Trust, this initiative began in Jharkhand and has since expanded through CIL’s subsidiaries. To date, over 2 lakh children have been screened with advanced diagnostic tools, and more than 1,500 corrective surgeries have been performed, all at no cost to the families involved, covering travel and hospitalization expenses.
Comprehensive CSR Framework
In addition to these initiatives, the Ministry of Coal unveiled a Comprehensive CSR Framework tailored for Indian coal companies, marking a significant advancement toward outcome-oriented CSR practices. This pioneering framework, developed by the Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs (IICA), serves as a guiding system to enhance the effectiveness of CSR efforts in coal mining areas.
During the event, Minister Reddy praised Coal India’s decade-long commitment to CSR, highlighting its efforts in healthcare, education, and community development. He emphasized that a collaborative approach involving governments, implementing agencies, and parents will only strengthen the support these children receive. Minister Dubey echoed this sentiment, affirming that every child should have access to essential healthcare to live a dignified life.
Shri Vikram Dev Dutt, Secretary of the Ministry of Coal, acknowledged the positive impact of CIL’s initiatives, commending the doctors and partner organizations for their dedication. He noted the importance of transparency, accountability, and scalability in delivering effective health care to those who need it most.
Additional Secretary Rupinder Brar delivered a powerful address, stating that true CSR lies in empowering communities and ensuring local needs are met through thoughtful planning. She described the new framework as a vital step toward ensuring that CSR initiatives bring tangible benefits to coal mining communities.
Dr. Shantanu Sen, a medical expert, emphasized the critical need for affordable treatments for Thalassemia, thanking Coal India for its innovative support through TBSY. Beneficiary families shared their heartfelt stories, expressing gratitude for the timely interventions that have given them renewed hope and a brighter outlook on the future.
The event concluded with the release of a book on TBSY, screenings of informational films about CIL’s health initiatives, and a celebration of the doctors and organizations involved in these transformative efforts.
