Chola Temples: Preservation Efforts and Cultural Celebrations

The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) oversees the conservation of three historic Chola Temples, ensuring their preservation through ongoing efforts aligned with the National Policy for Conservation, 2014. These temples, which include the iconic Brihadeeswara temple, Gangaikonda Cholapuram, and the Airavateswarar temple, remain in excellent condition as a testament to the diligent restoration and maintenance by ASI.

In the past three years, substantial investments have been made towards enhancing the structural integrity of these temples, improving visitor facilities, and facilitating digital documentation of their rich history. A detailed breakdown of the financial resources allocated during these years can be found in Annexure – I, illustrating the commitment to preserving these architectural marvels.

Cultural Commemoration of Rajendra Chola-I

In a significant cultural initiative, the Ministry of Culture recently celebrated the birth anniversary of Rajendra Chola-I. This celebration honors the 1000-year anniversary of his maritime expedition in Southeast Asia, as well as the construction of the Gangaikonda Cholapuram temple. From July 23 to July 27, 2025, cultural performances organized by the South Zone Cultural Centre (SZCC) in Thanjavur drew large crowds, turning the temple into a hub of artistic expression.

The event witnessed the participation of 29 Adheenam leaders, showcasing the importance of community and tradition in the celebrations. A notable highlight was the performance of Devaram Thirumurai by 38 Othuvars from across Tamil Nadu, a ritual that enriches the spiritual ambiance of the region. This was further enhanced by a musical presentation from renowned composer Shri Ilayiraaja, captivating audiences with his artistic prowess.

Artistic Showcases and Community Engagement

Throughout the festivities, various folk artists took the stage, presenting traditional performances that reflect the vibrant cultural heritage of Tamil Nadu. The Othuvars, a group dedicated to preserving the sacred practice of singing Devaram Thirumurai, played a significant role in the event, highlighting this vanishing tradition that thrives in select Shiva temples across the region.

In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, Union Minister for Culture and Tourism, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, emphasized the concerted efforts made by the government in the realm of temple conservation and cultural heritage. The initiatives taken not only ensure the preservation of these historical sites but also foster a deep appreciation of the rich cultural tapestry woven by the Chola dynasty.

As these efforts continue, the ASI remains committed to engaging expert agencies in the planning and execution of conservation strategies, always adhering to UNESCO guidelines and the National Policy for Conservation.”
