China’s GDP Grows 5% in Q1, Surpassing Expectations Amid Limited Impact from Iran Conflict

China’s economy showed unexpected strength in the first quarter of 2026, with a year-on-year growth of 5.0%, surpassing economists’ predictions. This growth comes amid global uncertainties, particularly due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has affected energy prices and shipping routes. Despite these challenges, the National Bureau of Statistics highlighted the resilience of China’s economy, suggesting that policymakers may have more time before needing to implement further stimulus measures.

Strong Economic Performance Amid Global Tensions

China’s gross domestic product (GDP) growth in the first quarter of 2026 marked the fastest pace in three quarters, according to data released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). The growth rate exceeded the median forecast of 4.8% from economists and was an improvement over the previous quarter’s 4.5%. The NBS emphasized that the economy has made a robust start to the year, showcasing its resilience and vitality despite external pressures. The ongoing conflict in the Middle East, particularly the US-Israel war on Iran, has led to a surge in global energy prices, disrupting shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a vital route for oil and natural gas. Analysts noted that China’s diversified energy supply has provided some protection against immediate shocks, although prolonged conflict could dampen global demand and negatively impact exports.

Export Growth and Domestic Challenges

While China’s export sector has remained strong, recent data indicated a slowdown in export growth, particularly in March. The country recorded a significant trade surplus of $1.2 trillion last year, but the latest figures suggest that the war’s impact is beginning to be felt. Retail sales rose by only 1.7% year-on-year in March, falling short of the expected 2.4%, while industrial production grew by 5.7%, beating estimates but showing signs of moderation. Zichun Huang from Capital Economics pointed out that the first-quarter growth was largely driven by exports, but she cautioned that growth may soften in the coming months as China becomes increasingly reliant on external demand, a trend likely exacerbated by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.

Geopolitical Risks and Economic Outlook

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) recently revised its growth forecast for China in 2026, lowering it to 4.4% from 4.5%. The IMF warned that the global economy could be “thrown off course” by the Middle East conflict, highlighting the unevenness in global economic recovery. Beijing has set a modest growth target of 4.5-5.0% for the year, the lowest in decades, amid ongoing challenges in the property sector and weak domestic consumption. Wang Jun, deputy head of China’s customs administration, acknowledged the rising risks posed by geopolitical tensions, stating that the impact of international conflicts on global supply chains is still evolving. Economists remain cautious, noting that while the current data reflects short-term resilience, escalating geopolitical issues and declining global demand could hinder China’s growth trajectory in the months ahead.

Implications for Future Policy

As China navigates these complex economic challenges, the government may need to consider its policy options carefully. The resilience demonstrated in the first quarter provides a buffer, but the potential for a prolonged conflict in the Middle East raises concerns about future growth. With domestic activity, particularly in the housing sector, lagging behind exports, policymakers may face difficult decisions regarding stimulus measures. The situation remains fluid, and the interplay between domestic economic performance and external geopolitical factors will be crucial in shaping China’s economic landscape in the near future.
