Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Engages with National Statistical Commission
A significant meeting took place between Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and key officials from the National Statistical Commission (NSC) and the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI). The discussions focused on enhancing the statistical framework in Uttar Pradesh to support the state’s ambitious goal of becoming a one trillion-dollar economy. Strengthening Statistical Systems
The meeting brought together prominent figures, including Prof. Rajiva Laxman Karandikar, Chairman of the NSC, and Dr. Saurabh Garg, Secretary of MoSPI. Their discussions centered on the need to bolster Uttar Pradesh’s statistical capabilities. Chief Minister Adityanath expressed appreciation for the collaborative efforts between MoSPI and NSC, particularly in enhancing the accuracy of key economic indicators such as State GDP, Consumer Price Index, and employment statistics. The Chief Minister highlighted initiatives like the CM Dashboard and the One Trillion Economy Mission, which aim to facilitate real-time data access and improve decision-making processes. Dr. Saurabh Garg elaborated on the ongoing collaboration under the “Support for Statistical Strengthening (SSS)” Scheme. He assured that both technical and financial assistance would continue to be available for developing modern statistical infrastructure in Uttar Pradesh. This includes enhancing data management systems and conducting training sessions for Directorate of Economics and Statistics (DES) officials on new methodologies and technologies.
The meeting acknowledged Uttar Pradesh’s progress in various statistical domains. The state currently boasts one of the lowest inflation rates among major states and regularly publishes its State-level Index of Industrial Production (IIP). Furthermore, the DES has actively participated in national surveys, such as the Periodic Labour Force Survey and the Household Consumption Expenditure Survey. Discussions also touched upon the upcoming revision of the base year for GDP and IIP to 2022–23, with MoSPI pledging full support in developing the new item basket and factory frame.
Future Directions and Data Quality
The NSC commended the DES for its efforts in integrating statistical data with governance and development planning. The Chairman encouraged the state to broaden its statistical coverage to include emerging sectors, particularly those related to digital and service-based economies. He stressed the necessity of ensuring data quality at the district level through methodological reviews.
Chief Minister Adityanath welcomed the suggestions and expressed the state’s willingness to work closely with MoSPI and NSC. He noted that credible data is vital for assessing progress in critical areas such as agriculture, industry, health, and education. The Chief Minister assured ongoing institutional support for all statistical initiatives in the state.
The meeting also highlighted the significance of utilizing administrative and alternative data sources, leveraging technology for real-time reporting, and adopting uniform standards aligned with the National Statistical System. MoSPI indicated that regular consultations and capacity-building programs would empower states to utilize statistical data more effectively for local and regional development.
