Chhaava Faces Criticism Over Historical Accuracy
In recent times, historical dramas have become a focal point for criticism from various community groups. The upcoming film Chhaava, starring Vicky Kaushal and Rashmika Mandanna, is no exception. Following the release of its trailer, the film has come under scrutiny from former Rajya Sabha MP Sambhajiraje Chhatrapati and Maharashtra Minister Uday Samant. Both have raised concerns about the film’s portrayal of the life of Maratha warrior Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. As the film gears up for its release on February 14, the filmmakers are urged to ensure accuracy and sensitivity in their storytelling.
Uday Samant Calls for Screening
Maharashtra Minister Uday Samant has voiced his concerns regarding the film’s content. He took to social media to express the need for a screening before the film’s release. In his note, he acknowledged the significance of creating a Hindi film based on Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj’s life. He stated, โIt is a matter of joy that a Hindi film based on the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the protector of religion and freedom, is being made.โ However, he also highlighted that many viewers found certain scenes objectionable.
Samant emphasized that the film should not be released without first being shown to experts and knowledgeable individuals. He firmly stated, โAnything that will harm the honor of the Maharaj will not be tolerated.โ His call for action reflects a broader concern about how historical figures are represented in cinema. The minister’s insistence on a screening indicates the importance of cultural sensitivity in filmmaking, especially when dealing with revered historical figures.
Sambhajiraje Chhatrapati’s Concerns
Former Rajya Sabha MP Sambhajiraje Chhatrapati, a descendant of the Shivaji family, has also raised objections regarding the film. He expressed his concerns about a specific scene involving a ‘lezim,’ a traditional dance form. While he praised the film for highlighting the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, he urged the filmmakers to conduct thorough research to ensure historical accuracy.
Chhatrapati stated, โI told them I would like to watch the entire movie before its release. I also offered to connect them with historians to address inaccuracies.โ His willingness to assist the filmmakers underscores the importance of collaboration between filmmakers and historians. However, he lamented that the filmmakers had not yet engaged with historians to discuss the portrayal of Sambhaji Maharaj. He stressed that while artistic liberties are common in cinema, they should not compromise the dignity and historical accuracy of the subject matter.
The Story of Chhaava
Chhaava is set against the backdrop of the Maratha Empire and focuses on the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. The film portrays his journey to continue the fight for Swarajya, a mission initiated by his father, Shivaji Raje. Vicky Kaushal plays the lead role, while Rashmika Mandanna portrays his wife, Yesubai. The film also features Akshaye Khanna as Aurangzeb, among other notable actors in supporting roles.
Directed by Laxman Utekar and produced by Maddock Films, Chhaava aims to bring the story of a significant historical figure to the silver screen. However, with the current criticism surrounding its portrayal, the filmmakers are under pressure to ensure that the narrative is both respectful and accurate. As the release date approaches, the filmmakers must navigate these challenges to honor the legacy of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj while delivering an engaging cinematic experience.
