Character AI Launches Parental Insights for Teen Safety
Character AI, a California-based artificial intelligence platform, has unveiled a new safety feature called Parental Insights, aimed at users under 18. This initiative allows parents or guardians to receive summaries of their teen’s activities on the platform, enhancing transparency and communication. The move comes in response to recent lawsuits concerning harmful interactions between the AI chatbot and underage users.
New Feature Enhances Parental Control
On Tuesday, Character AI announced the rollout of its Parental Insights feature through a blog post. This tool is accessible to all registered users under 18, regardless of whether they are on the premium or free tier. By adding a parent or guardian’s email address, teens can ensure that their guardians receive daily summaries of their in-app activities. The company emphasized that these insights will provide a clearer understanding of how younger users engage with the platform.
Parents will receive a daily report detailing their teen’s average time spent on the platform, the AI characters they interacted with most frequently, and the duration of those interactions. However, it is important to note that no chat content will be included in these reports, focusing instead on engagement patterns. This initiative aims to foster a safer online environment for younger users while keeping parents informed.
How to Set Up Parental Insights
To enable the Parental Insights feature, underage users must navigate to the Settings menu, select Preferences, and then click on the Parental Insights tab. This will open a new page where they can input their parent or guardian’s email address. Once the email is added, an invitation will be sent to the designated address. The parent or guardian must click the “Agree” icon in the email to start receiving daily reports.
If a user decides they no longer wish to share their activity, they can easily remove the email address by selecting the dropdown menu next to it in the Parental Insights tab. An email notification will inform the parent or guardian of this request, requiring their confirmation before the email address is removed from the system.
