Centre Refutes Bhutan’s Claims on E20 Petrol Export Proposal
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG) has refuted claims that Bhutan rejected an offer to import India’s E20 petrol. The ministry clarified that no such offer was made by Indian oil marketing companies (OMCs) and that there is currently no proposal for exporting E20 petrol to Bhutan. This statement comes in response to allegations made by the Congress party regarding fuel refusals from Bhutan, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka.
In a Facebook post, MoPNG stated, “Claims that Bhutan declined an offer to import E20 petrol from India are incorrect. No such offer has been made by the Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs), and there is no proposal for export of E20 petrol to Bhutan.” The clarification follows a post by Congress Kerala, which criticized the government for the alleged refusals of its ethanol-blended fuel.
Concerns have been raised about the performance and reliability of the newly introduced E20 blend fuel as its rollout progresses across India. In response, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) emphasized that E20 fuel was launched only after extensive laboratory, vehicle, and field testing conducted by leading technical institutions in India. The ministry assured that scientific methods ensured the fuel’s reliability and performance.
The government also noted that vehicle manufacturers are aligning their products with the ethanol-blending standards. MIB clarified that using approved E20 fuel does not void a manufacturer’s warranty, even with the introduction of ethanol-blended petrol. The ministry highlighted that ethanol blending is a scientifically designed fuel formulation, recognized internationally, and implemented under India’s Ethanol Blended Petrol Programme, similar to practices in countries like Brazil.
Extensive testing by organizations such as ARAI, Indian Oil R&D, and IIP found no significant engine durability or performance issues with E20 in older vehicles. The ministry reported that millions of vehicles have been operating on E20 since the nationwide rollout on April 1, 2025, without any evidence of engine failures linked to the fuel.
