Centre further slashes price of tomato; to be sold at Rs 70 per kg by NCCF and NAFED from tomorrow

Department of Consumer Affairs ordered NCCF and NAFED to sell tomatoes at retail price of Rs.70/- per kg from 20th July 2023 in view of the downward trend in tomato prices. Tomatoes purchased from NCCF and NAFED were initially retailed at Rs.90/- per kg and then reduced to Rs.80/- per kg from 16th July 2023. Reduction to Rs.70/- kg will further benefit consumers.

It can be recalled that on the recommendation of the Department of Consumer Affairs, NCCF and NAFED had started the procurement of tomato from mandis in Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Maharashtra for simultaneous disposal in the main consumption centers where retail prices recorded the maximum increase in the last month . The tomato retailing in Delhi-NCR had started since 14thth July 2023. Until 6pmth July 2023 a total of 391 tons of tomato was purchased from the two agencies which are continuously disposed of to retail consumers in major consumer hubs of Delhi-NCR, Rajasthan, UP and Bihar.
