Celebrating National Milk Day 2024

The Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying (DAHD) is set to celebrate “National Milk Day” on November 26, 2024. This significant event will take place at the Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi. It commemorates the 103rd birth anniversary of Dr. Verghese Kurien, who is affectionately known as the โ€œFather of the White Revolution in India.โ€ The celebration aims to highlight the vital contributions of the dairy sector to India’s economy and nutritional security. Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, Shri Rajiv Ranjan Singh, will serve as the Chief Guest. He will be joined by other dignitaries, including the Ministers of State for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry, and Dairying, Prof. S.P. Singh Baghel and Shri George Kurian.

Honoring Excellence in Dairy Farming

A key feature of National Milk Day will be the presentation of the prestigious National Gopal Ratna Awards. These awards are among the highest national honors in the livestock and dairy sector. They will recognize outstanding contributions in three categories: Best Dairy Farmer rearing indigenous cattle or buffalo breeds, Best Artificial Insemination Technician, and Best Dairy Cooperative Society or Milk Producer Company. Notably, a special award will also be given to winners from the North Eastern Region in each category.

During the event, some awardees will share their experiences. They will provide valuable insights into best practices, innovations, and sustainable approaches they have adopted in the dairy sector. This sharing of knowledge will inspire others in the industry and promote a culture of excellence.

Launching Key Publications

The event will also see the launch of two significant publications. The first is the Basic Animal Husbandry Statistics (BAHS)-2023. This report offers vital insights into trends in the livestock and dairy sector. It aims to support data-driven policymaking, which is crucial for the sector’s growth.

The second publication is a Manual on the Identification of Elite Cows. This manual is designed to guide the creation of a national Milch herd composed of the best dairy animals. It underscores the government’s commitment to evidence-based decision-making and technological advancement in animal husbandry. These publications will serve as essential resources for stakeholders in the dairy industry.

Engaging Discussions and Nationwide Participation

National Milk Day will feature two thought-provoking panel discussions. The first panel, titled โ€œWomen-Led Livestock and Dairy Sector,โ€ will explore the transformative role of women in the industry. It will emphasize the importance of gender inclusivity and empowerment in the livestock and dairy sectors.

The second discussion, themed โ€œEmpowering Farmers through Local Veterinary Support,โ€ will focus on strategies to strengthen local veterinary support systems. This is a critical component of India’s rural economy.

The event will attract participation from farmers, milk federations, dairy cooperatives, and other stakeholders from across the country. National Milk Day 2024 will celebrate India’s leadership in the global dairy sector. It will emphasize the importance of sustainable and inclusive growth in the livestock and dairy industries. The event will recognize the dedication of dairy farmers and stakeholders while inspiring innovation and fostering stronger partnerships. It serves as a platform to honor the achievements of those involved and encourages continued collaboration and progress in the sector.
