Celebrating 75 Years of the Indian Constitution
On November 26, 2024, the 10th Samvidhan Diwas was celebrated at Samvidhan Sadan, marking the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Indian Constitution. Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla emphasized the importance of constructive dialogue among Members of Parliament. He urged them to embrace the traditions of the Constituent Assembly, where diverse ideologies were discussed with dignity and respect. This event was graced by notable dignitaries, including President Droupadi Murmu, Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The theme for this yearโs celebration was “Humara Samvidhan, Humara Swabhimaan,” reflecting a collective pride in the Constitution.
The Legacy of the Constituent Assembly
Shri Om Birla recalled the significant contributions of the Members of the Constituent Assembly. Despite their differing ideologies, they engaged in meaningful discussions to shape the Constitution. This spirit of respectful dialogue is crucial for the functioning of democracy. Birla highlighted that the Constitution is not merely a legal document but a social contract that binds the nation together. He urged current Members of Parliament to adopt this tradition of constructive dialogue in their legislative practices.
The Speaker also paid tribute to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the chief architect of the Constitution. He noted that Ambedkar envisioned a document that would not only protect freedom and equality but also unite the people of India. This vision remains relevant today as the nation strives for social and economic progress. The Constitution has been a guiding force in addressing the needs of the people and adapting to changing circumstances over the past 75 years.
Celebrating the Constitution’s Impact
During the event, Shri Birla emphasized the Constitution’s role in driving social and economic changes in India. He stated that the nation is on a path towards becoming a โViksit Bharatโ (Developed India) through collective efforts. The Speaker called for the 75th anniversary to be celebrated as an “Utsav” (festival) in constituencies across the country. He encouraged public participation to strengthen the spirit of “Nation First.”
Birla pointed out that the Constitution has ensured the harmonious functioning of the three pillars of democracy: the Legislature, Executive, and Judiciary. Over the years, these branches have worked together to serve the nation effectively. The adaptability of the Constitution has allowed it to evolve through numerous amendments, reflecting the changing needs and aspirations of the people. This adaptability has strengthened public faith in democracy and governance.
Honoring the Constitution’s Journey
The celebration included the release of a commemorative coin and stamp dedicated to the Constitution’s 75th anniversary. Additionally, two books titled โMaking of the Constitution of India: A Glimpseโ and โMaking of the Constitution of India & its Glorious Journeyโ were launched. A booklet highlighting the art of the Constitution was also unveiled, along with new versions of the Constitution in Sanskrit and Maithili.
The event featured a short film showcasing the Constitution’s historical journey and significance. President Droupadi Murmu led the nation in reciting the Preamble, reinforcing the collective commitment to uphold constitutional values. Shri Birla noted that the decision to celebrate Constitution Day annually, initiated by Prime Minister Modi in 2015, aims to connect the youth with the ideals enshrined in the Constitution.
In conclusion, the 75th anniversary of the Indian Constitution serves as a reminder of its enduring relevance. It inspires citizens to uphold its values and contribute to the nation’s development. The commitment to constitutional principles not only enhances India’s global standing but also fosters a sense of unity among its diverse population.
