CEA Urges Companies to Avoid Timidity and Focus Beyond Market Capitalization and Derivative Volumes

India’s Chief Economic Advisor,(CEA) V. Anantha Nageswaran, emphasized the need for a shift in focus for the country’s financial sector during his address at the CII Financing Summit 2025. He cautioned against relying on market capitalization ratios and derivative trading volumes as indicators of progress, labeling them as misleading metrics that could divert investments from productive uses. Nageswaran urged banks and financial institutions to adopt a more innovative and risk-taking approach to meet India’s long-term development goals amidst a changing global landscape.

Rethinking Financial Metrics

During his keynote speech, Nageswaran criticized the common practice of celebrating market capitalization and derivative trading volumes as signs of financial sophistication. He argued that these metrics do not accurately reflect the health of the economy and can lead to misallocation of domestic savings. Instead, he called for a focus on long-term development needs, particularly as India faces increasing global uncertainties and domestic capital demands. Nageswaran quoted a poet to highlight the importance of recognizing the long journey ahead, stating, “We must avoid the temptation to celebrate prematurely when the road ahead is long.” He stressed that the financial sector should prioritize productive investments that align with national development goals.

Strengthening Domestic Institutions

Nageswaran pointed out that external financing alone will not suffice to meet India’s ambitious development objectives. He emphasized the necessity for stronger domestic institutions to navigate the complexities of a rapidly changing global environment. He advocated for a transition from merely preserving balance sheets to actively deploying them in ways that foster innovation and growth. The Chief Economic Advisor highlighted that the current moment presents a significant opportunity for institutions willing to take long-term positions. He warned against timidity, urging financial leaders to embrace calculated risks to support India’s economic ambitions.

Addressing Global Risks and Opportunities

In his address, Nageswaran also discussed the broader global context, noting potential risks such as misallocated capital in advanced economies. He echoed concerns from the International Monetary Fund regarding the possibility of a downturn in the artificial intelligence sector that could rival the severity of the dot-com crash. As India seeks to reposition itself within restructured supply chains, he urged financial institutions to innovate and develop new instruments that would enhance the country’s strategic leverage on the global stage. He underscored the importance of long-term domestic capital to support industrial upgrades, leverage demographic advantages, and enhance energy security.

Encouraging Innovation and Ambition

While acknowledging the current health of India’s banking system, Nageswaran cautioned against complacency. He stated, “We must not mistake strength for readiness,” emphasizing that the upcoming decade will present new challenges for domestic institutions. He called for increased support for innovators, the development of deeper bond markets, and a reevaluation of financial intermediation as tokenization becomes more prevalent. Nageswaran concluded by asserting that leaders in the Indian financial sector have a historic opportunity to shape the future, urging them to combine aspiration with discipline and ambition to navigate the evolving economic landscape.
