Canada Commits to Safeguarding Workers Following Trump’s 50% Tariffs on Selected Goods
Prime Minister Mark Carney criticized US President Donald Trump’s recent decision to impose 50% tariffs on select Canadian goods, calling it a “direct violation” of the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA). The tariffs target various Canadian exports, including motor vehicles, dairy products, and alcoholic beverages, escalating trade tensions between the two countries. Carney emphasized that the Canadian government will continue to support its workers, businesses, and families in light of these developments.
Carney stated that the latest US tariffs are part of a series of unilateral trade actions that breach CUSMA. He pointed out that these measures began with previous tariffs imposed by the US on the Canadian auto sector. “Canada, as is its right, has merely matched those measures,” Carney noted, referring to the retaliatory actions taken by Canada in response to US tariffs.
The Prime Minister highlighted that the tariffs and ongoing threats to Canadian sovereignty have fostered unity across the country. He remarked that Canadians from all provinces and territories have come together to support the economy and defend their workers, farmers, and businesses. Carney also mentioned that Canada has proposed detailed solutions to resolve the trade dispute and modernize CUSMA, expressing readiness to engage in further negotiations.
In his statement, Carney reiterated Canada’s commitment to free and fair trade, citing the government’s efforts to establish over 20 new economic and security partnerships. He acknowledged that the trade dispute has increased costs for families, particularly in the US, and expressed Canada’s willingness to work intensively with the US to address outstanding issues. The White House announced that the new tariffs will take effect 30 days after President Trump signed the proclamations, with exemptions for energy products, potash, fish, and critical minerals.
