Cabinet Approves Seven Major Decisions: Semicon 2.0, Varanasi Projects, Rail Upgrades, and More

The Union Cabinet approved a comprehensive package of seven major initiatives on Wednesday, focusing on infrastructure, semiconductor manufacturing, mobile phone production, fertilizer, and railway projects. This package, which includes the Semicon 2.0 Mission and the Mobile Phone Manufacturing Scheme, has a total outlay of Rs 2,19,353 crore. The announcements were made during a press briefing following a Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Infrastructure Developments in Varanasi

Two of the Cabinet’s decisions are aimed at enhancing infrastructure in Varanasi. The approved projects include the construction of a 46.039-km link corridor that will connect National Highway-19 (NH-19) with the Varanasi Ring Road. This initiative is designed to alleviate traffic congestion and improve connectivity along the Ganga riverbank.

The corridor will feature a six-lane elevated carriageway, an iconic cable-stayed bridge, and an extradosed foot over bridge-cum-major bridge, along with various loops, ramps, link roads, and service roads. The project will be developed under the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM) at a total cost of Rs 14,447.64 crore, which includes Rs 6,037.85 crore for civil construction and Rs 541.11 crore for land acquisition.

Semiconductor and Mobile Manufacturing Initiatives

The Cabinet also approved the Semicon 2.0 Mission, which has an outlay of Rs 1.27 lakh crore. This initiative aims to bolster India’s semiconductor manufacturing capabilities. Additionally, the Mobile Phone Manufacturing Scheme was extended, with Rs 62,500 crore allocated for its second edition.

The National Investment Policy for Urea was also approved, aiming to establish nine new urea plants to meet an additional requirement of 1 crore urea, thereby enhancing India’s self-reliance in urea production.

Railway Infrastructure Projects

On the railway front, the Cabinet greenlit two significant projects. The Paradeep-Haridaspur railway line will be doubled at a cost of Rs 2,542 crore. Additionally, a fourth railway line between Dangoaposi and Rajkharsawan will be constructed, involving an investment of Rs 1,365 crore. These projects are part of the government’s broader efforts to upgrade the railway network across the country.
