Bullet Train Project Reaches Key Milestone with First Mountain Tunnel Breakthrough in Maharashtra’s Palghar
India’s ambitious bullet train project reached a significant milestone with the completion of a high-speed mountain tunnel in Maharashtra’s Palghar district. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw celebrated the breakthrough of the 1.5-kilometer-long Mountain Tunnel-5 during a virtual event from Rail Bhawan in New Delhi. This tunnel marks the first of its kind completed on the Mumbai–Ahmedabad bullet train corridor, paving the way for further progress on the project, which aims to revolutionize rail travel in the region.
Breakthrough of Mountain Tunnel-5
The completion of Mountain Tunnel-5 is a crucial achievement for the Mumbai–Ahmedabad bullet train corridor, which is designed to enhance connectivity between two major cities. Minister Vaishnaw emphasized the importance of this milestone, noting that it clears the path for the entire stretch between Thane and Ahmedabad, with the exception of the undersea segment connecting Mumbai and Thane. The tunnel, located between the Virar and Boisar bullet train stations, is one of the longest in the Palghar district and represents the second tunnel breakthrough in Maharashtra, following the completion of a 5-kilometer underground tunnel between Thane and BKC in September 2025.
Challenges in Station and Depot Planning
During the press conference, Vaishnaw addressed the complexities involved in planning the project’s stations and depots. The Mumbai–Ahmedabad corridor will feature a total of 12 stations, with Sabarmati serving as the terminal station in Gujarat and BKC designated as the terminal in Mumbai. Interestingly, three depots are being constructed for this 508-kilometer stretch, which is more than the usual requirement of two depots for such a distance. The minister explained that this additional planning was necessary due to delays in obtaining permissions from the previous Maharashtra government under Uddhav Thackeray’s administration. These delays necessitated the construction of extra facilities to ensure the project’s timely completion.
Project Timeline and Future Developments
The Mumbai–Ahmedabad High-Speed Rail project, which traverses Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Dadra and Nagar Haveli, is designed for trains operating at speeds of up to 320 kilometers per hour. This high-speed travel is expected to significantly reduce journey times, with the trip between the two cities estimated to take approximately 2 hours and 17 minutes. Minister Vaishnaw recently announced that India is on track to launch its first bullet train by August 15, 2027. He outlined a phased rollout plan, starting with the section from Surat to Bilimora, followed by Vapi to Surat, Vapi to Ahmedabad, and finally, Thane to Ahmedabad before the complete Mumbai to Ahmedabad route is operational.
Upcoming Innovations in Rail Travel
In addition to the bullet train project, Vaishnaw revealed plans for the introduction of the first Vande Bharat sleeper train, which is expected to be launched later this month. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is anticipated to inaugurate this service in the latter half of January 2026. The introduction of the sleeper train is part of India’s broader efforts to modernize its rail infrastructure and enhance passenger comfort, further signaling the country’s commitment to advancing its transportation capabilities.
