Bullet Train Project Milestone: Second Tunnel Breakthrough in Maharashtra
The Union Minister for Railways, Information & Broadcasting, and Electronics & Information Technology, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, heralded a significant advancement in the Bullet Train Project with the recent breakthrough of the second tunnel in Palghar, Maharashtra. This achievement marks the completion of the first mountain tunnel in the state, known as MT-5, which spans approximately 1.5 kilometers and is one of the longest tunnels in Palghar district — located strategically between the Virar and Boisar bullet train stations.
Technological Milestones and Safety Standards
The excavation of the MT-5 tunnel has been a feat of modern engineering, utilizing a sophisticated drill and blast technique over 18 months. This method not only ensures precision but also allows for real-time monitoring of ground conditions during the excavation process. Essential safety precautions have been stringently observed throughout, covering ventilation, fire safety measures, and adequate access routes.
Enhancing Transportation and Economic Activity
This project is part of the ambitious Mumbai-Ahmedabad High Speed Rail (MAHSR), which spans a total length of 508 kilometers, featuring 27.4 kilometers of tunnels — 21 kilometers underground and 6.4 kilometers on the surface. In fact, prior to MT-5, an underground tunnel of about 5 kilometers was completed between Thane and BKC in September 2025. The MAHSR project includes eight mountain tunnels, with seven situated in Maharashtra, adding up to around 6.05 kilometers.
According to Minister Vaishnaw, the Bullet Train Project is not only creating numerous job opportunities but will also augment economic activities once operational. When completed, the train service will slice travel time between Mumbai and Ahmedabad to a remarkable 1 hour and 58 minutes, effectively bridging the gap between these significant commercial hubs. Moreover, the project is poised to lead to a drastic reduction of nearly 95% in carbon dioxide emissions in comparison to conventional road transport.
Progress on Additional Tunnels
Work continues on an additional seven mountain tunnels across Maharashtra. Notable advancements include MT-1, measuring 820 meters, which is currently 15% complete, while MT-3 and MT-4 have made strides of 35.5% and 31% respectively. The combined efforts in constructing these tunnels contribute towards a cumulative length of approximately 6 kilometers.
Spanning 508 kilometers, the MAHSR will interlink key cities such as Sabarmati, Ahmedabad, Anand, Vadodara, Bharuch, Surat, Bilimora, Vapi, Boisar, Virar, Thane, and Mumbai, marking a transformative evolution in India’s transport infrastructure.
