BSNL Soft Launches Quantum 5G Fixed Wireless Access

Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has officially launched its innovative Quantum 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) service in Hyderabad on June 18, 2025. This groundbreaking technology offers fiber-like internet speeds without the need for a physical SIM card, marking a significant advancement in India’s telecommunications landscape. The service was inaugurated by BSNL’s Chairman and Managing Director, Shri A. Robert J. Ravi, who emphasized the importance of this indigenous solution in enhancing connectivity across the nation.
Revolutionary Features of Quantum 5G FWA
BSNL’s Quantum 5G FWA stands out for its unique SIM-less architecture, which allows customers to connect without a physical SIM card. This feature is made possible through BSNL’s Direct-to-Device platform, enabling automatic authentication of customer premises equipment (CPE). As a result, BSNL becomes the first Indian operator to introduce a production-grade SIM-less 5G service. Additionally, the entire technology stack, including the core, radio access network (RAN), and CPE, has been developed by Indian vendors under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, showcasing the country’s growing capabilities in telecommunications.
The service promises gigabit-class speeds, with initial tests in Ameerpet recording download speeds of 980 Mbps and upload speeds of 140 Mbps, along with sub-10 ms latency. This performance is ideal for high-definition streaming, cloud gaming, and remote work. Furthermore, the installation process is designed to be rapid, with a self-install gateway that can reach 85% of households in Hyderabad without the need for trenching or fiber installation.
Future Expansion Plans
Following the soft launch in Hyderabad, BSNL has ambitious plans for expansion. The company aims to roll out pilot programs in several other cities, including Bengaluru, Pondicherry, Visakhapatnam, Pune, Gwalior, and Chandigarh, by September 2025. This expansion is part of BSNL’s strategy to enhance its service offerings and reach a broader customer base.
In terms of pricing, BSNL has introduced competitive introductory plans, with rates starting at โน999 for 100 Mbps and โน1499 for 300 Mbps. These plans are designed to cater to a wide range of users, from individual consumers to small and medium enterprises. Additionally, the same 5G standalone core will support network-sliced, service-level agreement (SLA)-backed links for businesses, further enhancing BSNL’s service portfolio.
Commitment to Connectivity
The soft launch event was attended by various dignitaries, including members of BSNL’s Board of Directors, representatives from the Department of Telecommunications, and industry partners. This initiative underscores BSNL’s commitment to expanding its technological footprint across India, ensuring that connectivity reaches even the most remote and rural areas.
Shri Ravi highlighted that this controlled launch is aimed at fine-tuning the customer experience before a nationwide commercial rollout. BSNL is dedicated to leveraging its indigenous technology to position itself as a leader in the 5G space, paving the way for enhanced connectivity solutions across the country.
