BRO Clears Heavy Snow, Rescues Stranded Civilians and Troops
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has successfully executed a high-altitude rescue and road restoration operation at Chatergala Pass, located at 10,500 feet in the Bhaderwah–Chatergala region of Jammu and Kashmir. This operation was initiated after heavy snowfall disrupted access to the area on January 23, 2026. By working tirelessly over nearly 40 hours, the BRO managed to clear the road and ensure the safety of those stranded.
Rescue Effort Details
Beginning on January 24, 2026, the 118 Road Construction Company of the 35 Border Roads Task Force commenced extensive snow-clearance operations. Their dedicated efforts were directed at clearing approximately 38 kilometers of roadway that had been buried under 5 to 6 feet of snow.
By the evening of January 25, the team successfully reopened the route, enabling the safe evacuation of 20 civilians and 40 personnel from the 4 Rashtriya Rifles, along with their weapons and supplies. The entire rescue operation concluded at 02:30 hours on January 26, 2026, with no casualties reported, highlighting the remarkable skill and determination of BRO personnel in such a demanding environment.
