Boney Kapoor Shares Sridevi’s Generous Spirit Behind ‘Mom’ Fee and Her Hidden Talents

7 ยฝ years after the untimely passing of Sridevi, her husband Boney Kapoor has shared insights into her remarkable talents and dedication to her craft. In a recent interview with Komal Nahta, Kapoor revealed lesser-known aspects of Sridevi’s contributions to filmmaking, including her hands-on approach to makeup and costume design. He also discussed her commitment to mastering the Hindi language for her performances and a generous decision she made regarding her fees for the film “Mom.”

Unveiling Sridevi’s Creative Talents

Boney Kapoor emphasized Sridevi’s deep understanding of filmmaking, noting her keen eye for detail. He shared that she often took charge of her makeup, doing 90% of it herself. Sridevi was not only an actress but also a creative force behind her costumes. For the film “Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja,” she was dissatisfied with the outfits provided to her. To address this, she sent costume designer Leena Daru to Kashmir, where she was shooting, to create a new color scheme that matched her vision. Kapoor remarked on her ability to sketch outfits, highlighting her significant influence on renowned designers like Manish Malhotra and Neeta Lulla.

Sridevi’s Dedication to Dubbing

Boney Kapoor also shed light on Sridevi’s commitment to her performances, particularly her journey in mastering the Hindi language. Initially, several of her early Hindi films were dubbed, which left her feeling that her performances were not fully realized. To overcome this, she hired a Hindi teacher to assist her in the dubbing studio. This dedication paid off, as she was able to dub for her own roles in the Tamil and Telugu versions of “Mom.” For the Malayalam version, she worked closely with a dubbing artist to ensure that the synchronization matched her performance, showcasing her unparalleled dedication to her craft.

A Generous Gesture for A R Rahman

In the interview, Boney Kapoor recounted a touching moment regarding Sridevi’s willingness to prioritize the film’s quality over her own financial gain. For “Mom,” the couple initially wanted to hire the acclaimed composer A R Rahman, but his fees were beyond their budget. Sridevi, upon learning this, offered to forgo a substantial portion of her fee, which was between Rs. 50-70 lakhs, stating, “Mujhe mat dena par Rahman ko le lo.” This selfless act highlighted her commitment to the film and her respect for Rahman’s talent.
