The organization sought a court order to rename the film to *Chhatrapati Raja Shivaji* and requested that the court impose restrictions on the film’s release, screening, and public exhibition until the title was amended. Court’s Ruling
A division bench, led by Chief Justice Shree Chandrashekhar and Justice Gautam Ankhad, dismissed the petition, stating that it did not represent a genuine public interest. The judges highlighted that the plea was submitted just two days before the film’s release, which raised questions about its timing and intent. They noted that the title *Raja Shivaji* did not contain any derogatory implications regarding the status of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The court emphasized that public interest litigation should serve to address authentic public concerns rather than be used for last-minute objections.
Producers’ Defense
During the court proceedings, the producers of *Raja Shivaji*, including actor-director Riteish Deshmukh and others, defended the film’s title. They explained that the narrative focuses on Shivaji Maharaj’s life prior to his coronation in 1674, when he was officially bestowed the title of “Chhatrapati.” The producers also mentioned that a disclaimer providing this context had been included in the film and approved by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). They pointed out that the project had been publicly announced in February 2024, with its release date declared in 2025, indicating that the title had been in the public domain for a considerable time.
