Boeing Plans Increased Sourcing and Aircraft Deliveries in India
Boeing, the American aerospace giant, is set to ramp up its sourcing operations in India, currently valued at ₹10,000 crore annually from around 320 suppliers. This announcement comes as the company emerges from a significant crisis, with plans to deliver two aircraft per month to Indian airlines this year and next. Brendan Nelson, Boeing’s Senior Vice President, shared insights on the company’s future in India, emphasizing a commitment that extends beyond just aircraft sales.
Increased Aircraft Deliveries to Indian Airlines
Boeing’s delivery schedule for Indian airlines is on the rise, with expectations to reach a cap of 38 B737 MAX aircraft per month by the first half of this year. This model is particularly popular among Indian carriers, and the company is also increasing production of the B787 Dreamliner from five to seven units monthly. Air India is set to receive several wide-body aircraft over the next two years, marking a significant boost for the airline’s operations. Nelson highlighted that these increases are contingent on maintaining the highest standards of quality and safety in production.
Commitment to Infrastructure and Training
Boeing’s strategy in India extends beyond aircraft manufacturing. The company is actively involved in enhancing airport infrastructure, having completed flight procedures for the upcoming Greater Noida and Navi Mumbai airports. Nelson emphasized the importance of linking airports and fostering relationships among them. He stated that Boeing’s long-standing partnership with India is not merely transactional; it includes investments in pilot training, technician education, and maintenance, repair, and operations (MRO) services. These initiatives are crucial for both India’s aviation future and Boeing’s growth in the region.
Expanding Sourcing from Indian Suppliers
Currently, Boeing sources approximately $1.3 billion worth of components and parts from its 320 Indian suppliers, with a significant portion coming from small businesses. Nelson noted that the growth of this sourcing will depend on the company’s production rates, which currently include a backlog of 5,500 aircraft. He praised India’s reforms and emerging status as a superpower, stating that strengthening Boeing’s presence in India will also benefit the company’s operations in the United States.
Future Plans for Assembly Lines in India
When asked about the possibility of establishing a final assembly line in India, Nelson indicated that it would take time to develop a business case that justifies such an investment. While the demand in the region is growing, Boeing is focused on ensuring that its current operations and partnerships are robust before considering further expansion. The company’s commitment to India remains strong, with plans to enhance its footprint in the country as the aviation market continues to evolve.
