Beware: “We Found It” Text Could Compromise Your Apple ID Security
Losing a smartphone can be a daunting experience, but a new phishing scam is adding to the anxiety for iPhone users. Cybersecurity experts are alerting the public to a scheme where scammers pose as Apple’s Find My team, claiming to have located lost devices. Victims are tricked into revealing their Apple ID information, which can lead to unauthorized access to their accounts and devices.
Understanding the Scam
Fraudsters are leveraging Apple’s Find My feature to target individuals who have reported their devices as lost or stolen. When a user marks their iPhone as lost, they can display a custom message on the lock screen, including contact details for anyone who finds the device. Scammers have exploited this feature by sending deceptive text messages that appear to be from Apple. These messages often contain specific information about the lost device, such as its model, color, and storage capacity, which may be gleaned from the lock screen.
The messages typically inform the owner that their device has been found and provide a link to “view its location.” This tactic aims to create a sense of urgency and trust, prompting users to click on the link without hesitation.
How the Scam Operates
A typical message from the scammers might read: “We are pleased to inform you that your lost iPhone 14 128GB Midnight has been successfully located. To view the current location of your device, please click the link below…” Once the user clicks the link, they are redirected to a fraudulent Apple login page that closely resembles the legitimate Find My website.
Unwary users who enter their Apple ID credentials on this fake page inadvertently hand over their information to the scammers. With access to these credentials, the attackers can disable Apple’s Activation Lock, a crucial security feature designed to prevent unauthorized use or resale of stolen devices. This not only compromises the victim’s device but also puts their personal information at risk.
Protecting Yourself from Phishing Attacks
The Swiss National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) advises users to be vigilant and avoid clicking on links in unsolicited messages. They emphasize that Apple does not send text messages to notify users about recovered devices. Instead, users should rely solely on official notifications through the Find My app or iCloud.com for any updates regarding their lost devices.
To enhance security, users are encouraged to use a different email address on the lost-device lock screen and to enable a SIM card PIN to prevent misuse. Keeping antivirus software updated and utilizing features like identity monitoring or VPN protection can further mitigate risks.
If someone believes they have fallen victim to this scam, they should first report the incident to their local police station. Additionally, they can block the device using the government’s CEIR portal and register a complaint on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal at https://ceir.gov.in/. Taking these steps can help protect personal information and prevent further issues.
