BCCI Vice President Supports ICC Amid Pakistan’s Decision to Boycott India Match at T20 World Cup
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has expressed its full support for the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) position on sportsmanship following Pakistan’s announcement to boycott its T20 World Cup 2026 match against India, scheduled for February 15. BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla emphasized that the Indian board would refrain from further comments until it engages in formal discussions with the ICC. This statement comes after the Pakistan government confirmed that while the national team is cleared to participate in the tournament, it will not compete against India.
BCCI’s Support for ICC’s Stance
Rajeev Shukla, the vice-president of the BCCI, reiterated the board’s alignment with the ICC’s emphasis on sportsmanship. He stated, “ICC has issued a big statement, they have spoken about sportsmanship. We completely agree with the ICC.” Shukla highlighted that the BCCI would hold off on additional comments until they have discussions with the ICC. This approach reflects India’s commitment to uphold the values of fair play and integrity in cricket.
Pakistan’s Decision to Boycott
The announcement from the Pakistan government clarified that while the national team is set to participate in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, it will not take the field against India. The government made this declaration via a post on X, stating that the team “shall not take the field” for the February 15 match, without providing specific reasons for this decision. Despite this boycott, Pakistan will continue to compete in the rest of the tournament, which kicks off on February 7.
ICC’s Response to Selective Participation
In response to Pakistan’s decision, the ICC issued a firm statement emphasizing that “selective participation” contradicts the essence of a global sporting event. The ICC acknowledged the Pakistan government’s statement and is awaiting official communication from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). The governing body stressed that all qualified teams must compete on equal terms according to the established schedule. The ICC also underscored that tournaments are built on principles of integrity, competitiveness, and fairness, warning that selective participation undermines the spirit of the competition.
India’s Strong Position Ahead of the Tournament
As the tournament approaches, India is entering in a strong position, having recently secured a 4-1 victory in a five-match T20I series against New Zealand. The defending champions are placed in Group A, alongside Pakistan, Namibia, the Netherlands, and the USA.
