Bangladesh Government Responds to BCB Election Scandal Following Fraud Investigation

A recent investigation by a government-appointed committee in Bangladesh has revealed significant irregularities in the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) elections held in October 2025. The five-member panel, led by former justice AKM Asaduzzaman, reported evidence of vote-rigging, coercion, and a lack of transparency in the electoral process. The findings, submitted to the sports ministry, indicate that both BCB officials and individuals within the sports ministry were involved in manipulating the election, raising serious concerns about the integrity of the governing body of cricket in Bangladesh.

Investigation Findings

The investigation into the BCB elections has uncovered a range of serious issues. According to the report, the electoral process was marred by intimidation and procedural violations. Mohammed Aminul Ahesan, the sports director of the National Sports Council (NSC), highlighted that the elections were neither free nor fair. The committee noted that top BCB officials, including former president Aminul Islam, showed a lack of cooperation during the investigation. Aminul opted to submit a written response instead of attending an in-person hearing, which raised further suspicions about the transparency of the election process.

The report detailed how the election was manipulated, with evidence suggesting that the BCB board, under Aminul’s leadership, engaged in practices that compromised the integrity of the elections. Ahesan stated that the government now has sufficient grounds to dissolve the current BCB board, paving the way for a new ad hoc committee to oversee the board’s operations for the next three months.

Allegations of Power Abuse

The investigation also revealed allegations of power abuse by Aminul Islam. The committee found that he unilaterally nominated ten former cricketers as councillors, a move deemed a violation of the BCB constitution. This action was seen as a clear abuse of authority, as the president does not possess the power to make such nominations without proper procedures. The committee concluded that Aminul’s actions significantly influenced the election outcome, as he benefited from the support of these councillors.

Ahesan emphasized that the unilateral nominations were made without justifiable reasons, suggesting ulterior motives aimed at securing favorable outcomes in the elections. This manipulation of the electoral process has raised serious questions about the governance of cricket in Bangladesh and the need for reforms within the BCB.

Concerns Over E-Voting Process

The report also scrutinized the e-voting process used during the BCB elections. It indicated that the e-voting was conducted from a specific location, compromising the confidentiality of the votes. Interviews with voters revealed that the e-voting system appeared to be pre-planned, undermining the democratic principles that should govern such elections.

The committee noted that many voters were present at the polling station on the day of physical voting, yet e-voting was conducted at the Sheraton Hotel in Dhaka the night before. This raised alarms about the legitimacy of the voting process, with the committee suggesting that it resembled vote-rigging. The findings underscore the urgent need for a thorough review of the electoral processes within the BCB to restore trust and integrity in the organization.
