Australia’s Inaugural Orbital Rocket Eris Encounters Launch Failure

Recently, Australia made a significant leap in its space exploration efforts by launching its first Eris Rocket, marking a historic milestone for the nation. The rocket, developed entirely within Australia, took off from the Bowen Orbital Spaceport in Queensland on July 29, 2025, at 6:35 p.m. EDT (8:30 a.m. local time). However, the launch did not go as planned, as the rocket experienced a failure shortly after liftoff, crashing back to Earth just 14 seconds into its flight. Despite the setback, Gilmour Space, the company behind the launch, remains optimistic about future endeavors.
How Did The Failure Occur?
The launch of the Eris rocket was met with immediate challenges. As it lifted off, the rocket began to slide sideways, ultimately leading to its crash back to the ground within seconds. This incident has drawn comparisons to a similar failure experienced by Astra, a California-based company, during its third orbital launch attempt in 2021. Gilmour Space, however, had prepared for the possibility of failure. In a statement made earlier in February, the company emphasized the importance of gathering data from every phase of the flight, regardless of the outcome. They noted that the information collected would be invaluable for enhancing the reliability and performance of future launches. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries or environmental damage resulting from the incident.
Behind the Scenes of Orbital Launch: The Plans and Execution
The path to the July launch was fraught with challenges. Initially scheduled for May, the launch was postponed due to Tropical Cyclone Alfred. After the cyclone passed, Gilmour Space aimed for a mid-May launch, but a technical issue arose when the rocket’s payload fairing failed due to a power surge. Following repairs, the company set a new target for June, but unfavorable weather conditions forced another delay. Eventually, after overcoming these obstacles, the launch took place in July, showcasing the resilience and determination of the Gilmour Space team.
