Assam Launches Mission Senehjori to Elevate Muga Silk Industry
In a significant move to bolster Assam’s Muga silk sector, Union Minister for Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER), Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, alongside the Chief Minister of Assam, unveiled **Mission “Senehjori” – Assam Muga Silk USP**. This ambitious initiative aims to transform the region’s unique Muga silk industry into a high-value, globally recognized luxury textile ecosystem.
A Comprehensive Initiative for Muga Silk
Launched with support from various governmental bodies, including the Central Silk Board and the Ministry of Textiles, Mission Senehjori intends to enhance every aspect of the Muga silk value chain. This includes host-plant cultivation, silkworm seed production, reeling, weaving, branding, export promotion, and more. The Mission strives to address the economic undervaluation of Muga silk, which, despite its global recognition, has not been efficiently monetized.
A Cluster-Based Approach
Featuring a cluster-based strategy, the initiative will focus on key Muga silk-producing districts such as Jorhat, Sivasagar, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Majuli, and Sualkuchi. Plans are in place to enhance host plant ecology, modernize reeling infrastructure, support Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), and promote a unified brand identity under **”Senehjori”**. The mission is projected to invest between ₹396 and ₹411 crore over three years, with around ₹136 to ₹151 crore allocated from MDoNER.
Promoting Sustainable Livelihoods
Shri Scindia highlighted the essential role of Muga silk in Assam’s cultural heritage, stating that the mission is not just a government initiative but a collaborative effort involving multiple stakeholders, including central ministries, state governments, technical institutions, and private partners. He expressed hope that the implementation of Mission Senehjori would lead to significantly higher incomes for local weavers and rearers, who currently make only ₹18,000–21,000 annually from Muga silk.
Achieving Global Recognition
Emphasizing the mission’s potential, Scindia remarked that its success will be marked by Assam Muga silk securing premium positions in both domestic and international luxury markets. He reiterated the government’s commitment to enhancing the entire Muga silk value chain by focusing on quality assurance, branding, and export facilitation.
Creating Economic Opportunities
During the launch, the Chief Minister of Assam commended the MDoNER for initiating Mission Senehjori, affirming its potential to offer new opportunities to farmers, rearers, weavers, and artisans while safeguarding the state’s rich cultural heritage. The Minister of State for MDoNER, Dr. Sukanta Majumdar, remarked that this mission prioritizes the development of Assam, aiming to establish the state as a globally recognized hub for premium silk production, thereby fostering job creation and sustainable rural livelihoods.
Future Goals and Cultural Promotion
With vision set for 2028, the mission targets several outcomes, including the establishment of modernized Muga reeling units, regeneration of Muga host plants, and the enhancement of market access through branding and exports. Mission Senehjori also aims to promote Assam’s cultural economy through the development of a Muga Silk Trail and Silk Tourism Park, marking the state as a prime destination for silk heritage tourism.
