These prototypes reportedly date back to the time before the original AirPods were launched in 2016. At that time, Apple opted to release the earbuds exclusively in white, a decision that has persisted across subsequent models.
The leaked images indicate that these colorful AirPods were not merely conceptual sketches; they appear to be fully formed products, suggesting that Apple advanced its color testing into later stages of development. This implies that there were internal discussions about providing consumers with a broader range of options before the company ultimately decided on a uniform design. The color choices in these prototypes reflect a design philosophy Apple has employed in the past, as seen with products like the iPhone 5c, which was available in multiple shades to appeal to diverse user demographics. Current AirPods Lineup Stays Limited

Similar to the earlier prototypes, these versions never made it to market. Currently, Apple offers standard AirPods and AirPods Pro exclusively in white, while the AirPods Max stands out as the only product in the AirPods lineup available in multiple color options. The over-ear headphones were introduced with various finishes and later updated with new colors.
The emergence of these prototype images underscores the disparity between Apple’s internal design explorations and the products that ultimately reach consumers. While the company frequently investigates different design avenues, many concepts remain undisclosed. There is no official word on whether Apple intends to release colored AirPods in the foreseeable future.
