Apple’s New Account Migration Tool

On Tuesday, Apple unveiled a new tool designed to simplify the management of digital purchases and media data. This feature allows users to migrate their content from one Apple account to another. The Cupertino-based tech giant created this tool for users who have legacy accounts or those who find managing multiple accounts cumbersome. With this new option, users can consolidate their data into a single account, making it easier to access their purchases. However, before starting the migration process, users must meet specific criteria and ensure they are prepared for the transition.

Migrate Purchases from One Apple Account to Another

Apple has published a detailed support page outlining the eligibility criteria for account migration. Users can choose whether or not to migrate their accounts, making this an optional feature. If a user decides to transfer their secondary account, all associated payment methods will also be moved to the primary account. This means that any payment methods linked to the secondary account will replace those on the primary account.

In addition to payment methods, previous purchasesโ€”including apps, music, movies, TV shows, and booksโ€”will also be transferred. Other data such as existing subscriptions, music library information, profile personalization, social profiles, and podcast library data will migrate as well. However, if the primary account already has a music library, that data will not be transferred. It is important to note that this feature is currently unavailable to users in the European Union, United Kingdom, or India, limiting its accessibility for some customers.

Things to Ensure Before Beginning the Migration Process

Before starting the migration process, users should verify several important details. The account signed in with iCloud will be referred to as the primary Apple account, while the account used solely for media and purchases will be the secondary account. Users must ensure they are signed in with two different accounts on their devices. Additionally, the secondary account should not be part of a different family-sharing group or used for purchase sharing.

Another critical step is enabling two-factor authentication on both accounts. Users must also confirm that both accounts are set to the same country and region. It is essential that the secondary Apple account has no remaining balance and that there is a gap of at least 15 days since the last purchase. Once the migration is complete, the secondary account will no longer be usable for purchases or media. However, users do have the option to undo their migration if needed.
