Apple’s iOS 19 Set for Major Redesign

Apple is gearing up to launch its iOS 19 update, featuring a significant redesign that marks the first major visual overhaul in years. Recent leaks suggest that the update will introduce rounder app icons and innovative “floating” tab views within applications. Additionally, the built-in apps are expected to receive a fresh look, drawing inspiration from Apple’s visionOS design.
Floating Tabs Inspired by visionOS
In a recent video on the FrontPageTech YouTube channel, tech insider Jon Prosser unveiled mockups of iOS 19, based on leaked internal builds. One of the standout features is a redesigned Tab View that floats above the bottom edge of the screen, similar to the interface seen in visionOS applications. This new design aims to enhance user experience by providing a more dynamic and visually appealing way to navigate through apps.
Prosser also indicated that Apple plans to modify the shape of app icons in this update. Traditionally, iOS icons have been square with rounded edges, but iOS 19 may introduce a rounder variant of these ‘squircle’ icons. Unlike the fully circular icons found on stock Android devices, these new icons will maintain a unique shape that is noticeably rounder than those in previous iOS versions.
Last month, Prosser shared additional mockups showcasing redesigned apps for iOS 19, which are expected to incorporate elements inspired by the ‘glassy’ aesthetic introduced with visionOS on the Apple Vision Pro. This shift in design philosophy reflects Apple’s ongoing commitment to modernizing its software interfaces.
Hints from Recent Software Releases
Apple has already provided glimpses of its design direction through recent software updates. For instance, the new “floating” tabs were first seen in the redesigned Photos app on iOS 18. Similarly, the glass-like design elements appeared in the Invites app released earlier this year. These updates suggest that Apple is gradually integrating its visionOS design language into its existing applications.
However, it’s essential to approach these claims with caution. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman noted in his weekly Power On newsletter that many of the mockups circulating online are based on older builds of iOS 19. This indicates that while the redesign is anticipated, the final product may differ from the current leaks.
Anticipation Builds for WWDC 2025
Apple enthusiasts won’t have to wait long to see the official unveiling of iOS 19. The company has announced its next Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC 2025), scheduled to begin on June 9. During this event, Apple is expected to showcase its upcoming operating system updates for the iPhone, Mac computers, and other devices. As the date approaches, excitement continues to build around the potential features and design changes that iOS 19 will bring.
