Apple Surpasses Samsung as Leading Smartphone Brand in 2025: Report

Apple has officially dethroned Samsung to become the world’s leading smartphone brand in 2025, marking a significant shift in the global market dynamics. This achievement comes after 14 years of Samsung holding the top position. The surge in Apple’s sales is largely attributed to the successful launch of the iPhone 17 series, which has resonated well with consumers across various regions. According to data from Counterpoint Research, Apple now commands a 20 percent share of the global smartphone market.

Apple’s Impressive Growth

In 2025, Apple experienced a remarkable 10 percent increase in smartphone sales compared to the previous year. The launch of the iPhone 17 series in September played a crucial role in this growth, alongside the sustained popularity of the iPhone 16 in key markets such as India, Japan, and Southeast Asia. Notably, the iPhone 16 emerged as the best-selling smartphone in India last year. In the last quarter of 2025, Apple achieved a record 25 percent share of global smartphone shipments, outpacing Samsung, which closely followed. The overall smartphone market expanded by 2 percent, benefiting Apple as demand for premium devices surged. Additionally, many users who had delayed upgrades during the COVID-19 pandemic have now entered the replacement cycle, further boosting Apple’s sales.

Samsung’s Position in the Market

Samsung, while still a formidable player, has dropped to second place with a 19 percent market share. The company reported a 5 percent year-on-year growth, driven by its popular midrange A series and high-end Galaxy S25 and Z Fold 7 models. However, Samsung faced challenges in Latin America and Western Europe, which hindered its growth despite successes in Japan and other core markets. The competition remains fierce, and while Samsung continues to innovate, it must navigate these regional challenges to regain its former position.

Xiaomi’s Steady Performance

Xiaomi has managed to maintain its third-place position in the global smartphone market, holding a 13 percent market share. The company’s strategy of offering premium features at competitive prices, along with effective distribution channels, has allowed it to sustain stable shipments, particularly in emerging markets. Meanwhile, Vivo reported a 3 percent increase in sales, while Oppo experienced a 4 percent decline due to heightened competition in China and the Asia-Pacific region. Despite this, Oppo did see growth in sales in India, the Middle East, and Africa, indicating a mixed performance landscape among the leading smartphone brands.

Future Outlook for Smartphone Brands

The smartphone market is evolving rapidly, and the competition among leading brands is intensifying. As Apple continues to innovate and capture consumer interest, Samsung and Xiaomi will need to adapt their strategies to maintain their market positions. The increasing demand for premium devices and the ongoing replacement cycle present opportunities for growth, but brands must also address regional challenges and competition to thrive in this dynamic environment. The coming years will be crucial for these companies as they navigate the changing landscape of the global smartphone market.
