Apple Set to Introduce Competing Smart Glasses to Ray-Ban Meta

Apple is reportedly developing its first pair of smart glasses, which may feature a custom chip designed for augmented reality (AR) content. These glasses could also include a camera and microphones, similar to the recently launched Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses. Expected to debut within the next couple of years, Apple’s innovative wearable aims to enhance user experience with a power-efficient in-house chip that is still under development.
Development of a Dedicated Chip
According to a Bloomberg report, Apple’s silicon design team is working on a specialized chip intended for its upcoming smart glasses. This chip is based on the System in Package (SiP) technology utilized in the Apple Watch, which allows for greater power efficiency. The design reportedly eliminates unnecessary components, making it more efficient than other Apple Silicon chips.
Both models of Apple’s smart glasses, including one with true AR capabilities, are codenamed N401. The company is aiming to launch a competitor to the Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses within the next two years. Apple supplier TSMC is anticipated to start production of this dedicated chip by 2027. However, Apple faces significant challenges in entering the smart glasses market, as Meta has already established a foothold with its offerings.
Challenges in Competing with Meta
Apple’s entry into the smart glasses market comes at a time when Meta is expanding its own product line. The Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses, launched in 2023, allow users to capture images and videos while providing access to Meta’s AI features, such as text translation and reminder setting. In contrast, Apple has yet to announce any dedicated AI functionalities for its wearables.
To enhance battery life, Apple may consider offloading AI processing tasks to a connected smartphone. This strategy could help manage power consumption while delivering a seamless user experience. However, the competition remains fierce, as Meta is also planning to introduce more advanced wearables, including true AR glasses, by 2027.
Potential Features of Apple’s Smart Glasses
While specific features of Apple’s smart glasses remain under wraps, the company is known for its focus on user experience and innovative technology. The glasses are expected to support AR content, which could revolutionize how users interact with their environment.
In contrast, Meta is reportedly exploring the addition of facial recognition capabilities to its smart glasses. This feature would allow the glasses to identify users by name, raising privacy concerns for those nearby. As Apple develops its smart glasses, it will need to consider similar ethical implications while ensuring that its products remain competitive in a rapidly evolving market.
The Future of Smart Glasses
The development of smart glasses represents a significant shift in wearable technology. As companies like Apple and Meta invest in this space, consumers can expect a range of innovative features that enhance daily life. With Apple’s commitment to power efficiency and user experience, the upcoming smart glasses could set new standards in the industry.
