Apple Increases Recycled Material Usage to 30% in Products

Apple is making significant strides toward its ambitious goal of achieving 100% carbon neutrality across its supply chain and products by 2030. In a recent update, the tech giant announced that by 2025, 30% of the materials used in its products will come from recycled sources. This achievement is attributed to enhanced collaboration with its global supply chain and innovative changes in product design and manufacturing processes.

Commitment to Sustainable Materials

Apple has made notable advancements in the use of sustainable materials. The company now utilizes 100% recycled cobalt in all its batteries and incorporates 100% recycled rare earth elements in the magnets of its devices. These materials are essential in modern electronics, and their transition to recycled sources represents a significant shift in Apple’s manufacturing practices. This commitment not only reduces the environmental impact of sourcing new materials but also sets a precedent for the industry.

In addition to these changes, Apple has completely transitioned to fiber-based packaging, eliminating plastic from its product boxes. This shift means that the packaging is not only made from recycled materials but is also easier to recycle after use. The company has implemented design modifications, such as larger boxes that can collapse into smaller pieces, facilitating responsible disposal. These efforts contribute to Apple’s broader sustainability goals, showcasing its dedication to reducing waste and promoting recycling.

Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Apple’s environmental initiatives extend beyond material sourcing. The company reports a more than 60% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in 2025 compared to 2015 levels, all while continuing to grow its business. Over the past five years, Apple has successfully avoided using over 15,000 metric tonnes of plastic, which is equivalent to approximately 500 million plastic water bottles. This reduction is a testament to Apple’s commitment to sustainability and its proactive approach to minimizing its environmental footprint.

On the energy front, Apple has achieved a remarkable milestone by ensuring that all its global facilities operate on 100% renewable energy. The company has procured over 20 gigawatts of renewable energy across its supply chain, further solidifying its commitment to sustainable practices. Additionally, Apple is focused on water conservation, having replenished 55% of its corporate water usage and enabling suppliers to collectively save 17 billion gallons of water.

Innovations in Product Design: The MacBook Neo

A prime example of Apple’s sustainability efforts is the newly launched MacBook Neo, which the company claims is its lowest-carbon MacBook to date. This device features 60% recycled content overall, the highest percentage for any Apple product thus far. Notably, it includes 100% recycled cobalt in its battery and 100% recycled rare earth materials in its magnets. Apple is also evolving its manufacturing processes, employing a new anodization technique that allows for up to 70% water reuse. This innovative method is expected to be expanded to more products in the future, highlighting Apple’s commitment to sustainable design.

Advancing Waste Management and Recycling

Apple is actively working towards a “zero waste” goal, achieving a 75% waste diversion rate in 2025 through recycling, composting, and reduction initiatives. Its Fifth Avenue store in New York has become the first location to earn a true zero-waste certification, successfully diverting over 90% of its waste from landfills. In total, Apple claims to have diverted around 600,000 metric tonnes of waste from landfills in 2025, with over 400 supplier facilities participating in its zero-waste program.

Recycling plays a crucial role at the end of a product’s life cycle. When customers trade in or recycle their devices, Apple strives to recover as many usable materials as possible. To enhance this process, the company has introduced “Cora,” an electronics recycling line in California that employs precision shredding and advanced sensors to improve material recovery rates. Additionally, Apple is developing “A.R.I.S,” a machine learning-powered detection system designed to help recyclers identify and sort electronic waste more efficiently. This innovative software, which operates on Apple’s Mac mini, is already being utilized by recycling partners to scale the recycling process across the industry.
