Apple Appoints New Global Head of Retail

In a strategic move to enhance its retail operations, Apple has appointed Vanessa Trigub as the new global vice president of stores and retail operations. This decision, confirmed by sources familiar with the matter, aims to streamline the management structure under senior executive Deirdre O’Brien. Trigub, who previously managed retail locations in the Americas West region, will now oversee retail operations across Europe, the Middle East, Asia-Pacific, and the Americas East.

Leadership Changes at Apple

Apple’s decision to promote Vanessa Trigub reflects a significant shift in its retail management strategy. Trigub’s new role will simplify the reporting structure within the retail division, allowing Deirdre O’Brien to focus on broader organizational goals. Previously, O’Brien managed individual regional retail executives, but with Trigub’s promotion, she will now oversee only Trigub and the vice presidents responsible for retail real estate, marketing, and online sales.

O’Brien, a veteran of over three decades at Apple, returned to oversee both retail and human resources last year. The restructuring comes at a time when Apple is also reshuffling its HR organization following the departure of former chief people officer Carol Surface. This indicates a broader effort to refine leadership roles within the company.

Trigub’s Journey at Apple

Vanessa Trigub’s career at Apple began as an intern during the launch of the original iPhone. Since then, she has held various positions in finance, mergers and acquisitions, and retail operations. Her recent elevation to vice president in 2023 marked a significant milestone, as she took charge of retail operations in the Americas West region. With her extensive experience and proven track record, Trigub is seen as a potential successor to O’Brien, especially as many of Apple’s top executives approach retirement age.

Apple’s retail network, which encompasses approximately 535 stores globally, has experienced stability in leadership since O’Brien’s appointment in 2019. This contrasts with previous years when the retail division saw rapid changes in leadership, including the brief tenure of John Browett and the leadership of former Burberry CEO Angela Ahrendts.

Recent Management Developments

The appointment of Trigub is part of a broader trend of management changes at Apple. Just last week, the company announced a significant restructuring of its artificial intelligence division, transferring control of Siri from AI chief John Giannandrea to Mike Rockwell, the creator of Vision Pro. These changes reflect Apple’s ongoing efforts to adapt its leadership structure to meet the evolving demands of the technology landscape.
