Android Users to Receive Battery Alerts Before App Downloads
Android users may soon receive a new alert on the Google Play Store designed to enhance their awareness of battery consumption. Google is set to introduce a red warning badge that will inform users when an app “may use more battery than expected.” This initiative aims to identify applications that excessively drain battery life in the background, a concern that has been addressed through a new battery-impact metric developed in collaboration with Samsung.
Google’s latest update to Android vitals introduces a metric that monitors “excessive partial wake locks.” This feature is crucial for understanding how apps can prevent devices from entering sleep mode, allowing them to run even when the screen is off. When these wake locks are misused, they can lead to significant battery drain. To combat this issue, Google has established a clear threshold for what constitutes excessive use. An app will be flagged if it holds more than two cumulative hours of non-exempt wake locks within a 24-hour period. While certain exceptions exist—such as wake locks for audio playback or user-initiated file transfers—most background tasks will not qualify for these exemptions. If at least 5% of an app’s user sessions exceed this threshold over the past 28 days, Google will categorize it as a battery-draining app.
Implications for App Visibility
Beginning March 1, 2026, apps that exceed the established limits will face two significant consequences. First, they will experience reduced visibility on the Play Store, as they will be removed from key discovery sections, including recommendations. Second, these apps will display a red warning label on their listings, indicating that they have “high background activity” and may deplete battery life more quickly than anticipated. This new labeling system will empower Android users to make informed decisions before downloading apps that have a history of misusing background resources.
