Android Phones Enable AirDrop File Sharing with iPhones; More Devices to Follow
Google has made a significant advancement in bridging the gap between Android and iPhone users with the introduction of a new file-sharing feature. Starting this week, select Pixel 10 devices can now transfer files directly to iPhones using Quick Share, mimicking the functionality of Apple’s AirDrop for the first time. This update aims to simplify the sharing process for users in mixed-device environments, allowing for seamless transfers of photos, videos, and documents without the need for cables or cloud services.
New Feature Rollout
The Quick Share feature began rolling out on November 20, 2025, specifically for Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro XL, and Pixel 10 Fold devices. This update addresses long-standing frustrations among users who have struggled with cumbersome cross-platform file transfers. Google has responded to feedback from users who often find themselves in households or workplaces where both Android and Apple devices are present. With Quick Share, Pixel users can now easily share files with nearby Apple devices, enhancing the overall user experience.
When a Pixel device detects an iPhone, iPad, or Mac in proximity, it will display the Apple device as an available target for file sharing. To initiate the transfer, the Apple user must enable the “Everyone for 10 minutes” setting in AirDrop, a feature introduced in 2023 that allows temporary visibility for file sharing. Once the devices are connected via Bluetooth, the file transfer occurs over a direct Wi-Fi link, ensuring that the content remains local and does not pass through external servers.
Efficiency and Privacy
The new Quick Share feature promises to make everyday tasks easier for users who frequently switch between Android and Apple devices. Whether sharing vacation photos with friends, sending school assignments to children using iPads, or transferring design files to colleagues with MacBooks, this functionality streamlines the process. Local transfers are not only faster but also help users avoid mobile data charges and enhance privacy by keeping files off the cloud.
Small files, such as images, transfer almost instantly, while larger files, like videos, may take longer depending on the stability of the local Wi-Fi connection. This efficiency is particularly beneficial in environments where users need to share content quickly and securely.
Current Limitations and Future Plans
Despite the advantages of Quick Share, the feature is currently exclusive to Pixel devices, and Google has not provided a timeline for broader Android support. This limitation means that users with other Android devices will not yet benefit from this new capability. Apple, on the other hand, does not require any updates to its devices, as AirDrop already accommodates the temporary visibility feature that Quick Share utilizes.
While the process is largely straightforward, there is still a minor hurdle for users. The requirement to manually enable the “Everyone for 10 minutes” setting may deter some individuals from using the feature. Until more Android devices receive the update, Quick Share will remain a unique advantage for Pixel users.
