Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Shri Amit Shah, met with the 2023 batch probationers of the Indian Police Service (IPS) today in New Delhi. The event saw the IPS trainees share their training experiences with the Minister. Many important figures attended, including the Union Home Secretary, the Director of Intelligence Bureau (IB), and the Director of the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA).
India’s Vision for 2047: A Safe and Secure Future
During the interaction, Shri Amit Shah discussed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for 2047, when India will celebrate 100 years of independence. He stated that by then, India aims to be a terror-free and drug-free nation, ensuring internal security and protection of human rights for all citizens.
He highlighted the importance of the role that the current IPS batch will play in this vision. Shri Shah emphasized that this batch will carry a heavier responsibility than any previous one. Their role will be crucial in advancing next-generation policing, focusing on securing the country’s future.
Securing India’s Borders
The Union Home Minister proudly stated that India’s borders are now more secure than ever. He mentioned that no country dares to challenge India’s borders or its military. Shri Shah added that violence in Jammu & Kashmir, the North East, and Left Wing Extremism areas has decreased by 70%. The efforts of Indian agencies have resulted in better control in these regions.
He also stressed that the culture of resolving issues through the democratic process has strengthened, reducing the number of major protests that were common in earlier times.
Protecting Citizens’ Rights and Reducing Crime
Shri Amit Shah urged the IPS probationers to ensure the protection of citizens’ rights and work hard to reduce crime within the country. He emphasized that it is the police’s duty to deliver justice swiftly and efficiently.
He mentioned that 99% of police stations in India are now online through the Crime and Criminal Tracking Network & Systems (CCTNS). This online system has transformed policing by providing digital data that can be used for investigations. He also highlighted that three new laws have been introduced to further strengthen timely justice and increase the use of technology in solving cases.
Emphasizing Use of Technology in Law Enforcement
Shri Shah discussed how the new laws make use of scientific evidence to convict criminals, reducing the need for multiple witnesses in court. He said that in five years, these new laws will be fully operational across all police stations in India, helping complete justice proceedings within three years of an FIR (First Information Report) being registered.
He also spoke about the use of technology in e-summons, which is designed to work for the next 100 years. Forensic Science Laboratories (FSL) will play a key role in this system, as their reports will be sent directly to courts.
Ensuring Citizens’ Safety and Rights
Amit Shah reassured that the new laws also focus on safeguarding citizens’ rights. The number of people in police custody will be available online, and charge sheets must be filed within 90 days. He also highlighted the importance of recording search and seizure operations through videography to ensure transparency.
He mentioned that new databases for terrorism, narcotics, and fingerprints have been created. Artificial intelligence (AI) is also being integrated into police work to assist in analyzing data and improving overall efficiency.
Focus on National Security
The Home Minister clarified that national security does not only refer to protecting the country’s borders but also includes ensuring the safety of its citizens. He stated that protecting the rights of the poor, children, and women is of utmost importance.
Shri Shah added that the Constitution of India gives equal rights to all, and police officers play a crucial role in safeguarding these rights. It is the duty of the police to prevent any atrocities against citizens, ensuring that their rights are respected.
Motivation for Young IPS Officers
In closing, Shri Amit Shah encouraged the young IPS probationers to take pride in their work and to remember that every task is important. He told them that being remembered for their good work in their districts would be the greatest medal they could earn. He also stressed the need to work relentlessly against anti-national activities, with the security of the nation always in mind.
He assured the probationers that with their dedication and the use of advanced technology, they would play a pivotal role in shaping the next generation of policing in India.
