Amit Shah Inaugurates 59th DGsP/IGsP Conference

Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the 59th DGsP/IGsP Conference 2024 in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. This significant event marks a crucial gathering of police leadership from across India. The conference aims to address pressing national security challenges and enhance the effectiveness of law enforcement agencies. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair the proceedings on the second and third days of the conference. The event is being held in a hybrid format, allowing for both in-person and virtual participation from various ranks of officers.

A Gathering of National Security Leaders

The DGsP/IGsP Conference serves as a platform for the Directors General of Police (DGsP) and Inspectors General of Police (IGsP) from all states and Union Territories (UTs). This year, the conference has attracted heads of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and Central Police Organizations (CPOs) as well. The participation of the National Security Advisor, Ministers of State for Home, and the Union Home Secretary underscores the importance of this event.

During the conference, discussions will focus on various aspects of national security, including Left-Wing Extremism (LWE), coastal security, narcotics, cybercrime, and economic security. The top brass of police leadership will work together to develop a roadmap for addressing these challenges. The conference also aims to review the implementation of new criminal laws and share best practices in policing.

Recognition of Excellence in Policing

At the inauguration, Amit Shah conferred Police Medals for Meritorious Service to officers of the Intelligence Bureau. He also released the Ministry of Home Affairsโ€™ book on the โ€˜Ranking of Police Stations 2024โ€™. This book highlights the performance of police stations across the country. Additionally, Shah awarded trophies to the three best police stations, recognizing their exemplary service and commitment to public safety.

In his address, Shah commended the police leadership for their effective management of the General Elections 2024. He expressed satisfaction with the significant improvements in the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir, the North-East, and states affected by Left-Wing Extremism. These achievements reflect the dedication and hard work of law enforcement agencies in maintaining peace and order.

Transforming the Criminal Justice System

Amit Shah emphasized the transformative impact of the three new Criminal Laws introduced in India. He stated that these laws shift the focus of the criminal justice system from punishment to justice. The new laws are designed to align with Indian traditions and values, promoting a more humane approach to justice.

Shah highlighted the importance of these reforms in achieving Prime Minister Modiโ€™s vision of a โ€˜Viksit Bharatโ€™ (Developed India) by 2047. He called for a proactive approach to emerging security challenges, particularly along the Eastern border and in urban areas. The Home Minister urged law enforcement agencies to adopt a zero-tolerance strategy to combat crime effectively.

Future Directions for National Security

Over the next two days, the conference will delve deeper into national security issues. The police leadership will discuss strategies to counter existing and emerging threats. Topics such as LWE, coastal security, narcotics, cybercrime, and economic security will be at the forefront of these discussions.

The conference aims to foster collaboration among various law enforcement agencies. By sharing insights and best practices, the participants hope to enhance the overall effectiveness of policing in India. The outcomes of this conference will play a crucial role in shaping the future of national security and public safety in the country.
