Amit Shah Celebrates Savarkar’s Legacy at Cultural Event
In a significant cultural event held in Shri Vijayapuram, Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah commemorated the 115th anniversary of the poem Sagara Pran Talamalala, penned by the revered freedom fighter Swatantryaveer Savarkar. The event drew notable attendees, including Mohan Bhagwat, Sarsanghchalak of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), and Admiral (Retd.) D.K. Joshi, the Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
Addressing the gathering, Amit Shah underscored the Andaman and Nicobar Islands as a pilgrimage site for Indians, highlighting its historical significance as a place where Savarkar endured tremendous hardships during his imprisonment. He also acknowledged the islands’ connection to Subhas Chandra Bose, pointing out that they were the first land liberated by the Azad Hind Fauj. Shah mentioned how Bose advocated for the islands to be named ‘Shaheed’ and ‘Swaraj’, a vision realized under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.
During his speech, Shah emphasized the inauguration of a life-size statue of Veer Savarkar, a gesture undertaken by Mohan Bhagwat. He described this statue as a lasting symbol of Savarkar’s commitment and undying love for the nation, meant to inspire future generations. He stated, “This statue will remind many of Savarkar Ji’s sacrifices and resolve, making it a beacon for the youth to uphold his ideals of duty, courage, and national unity.”
He reiterated that Savarkar’s literary works, particularly Sagara Pran Talamalala, epitomize the spirit of patriotism, stating that true bravery lies not in the absence of fear but in the ability to overcome it. Shah remarked that this cultural event also saw the release of a coffee table book encapsulating Savarkar’s exceptional qualities and contributions.
Moreover, Shah highlighted Savarkar’s multifaceted life as a writer, freedom fighter, and social reformer who eloquently voiced the ideals of Hindutva while promoting equality and fighting social evils within society. He noted that Savarkar’s efforts towards the eradication of untouchability had not received due recognition, reflecting on his courageous stance against the prevailing social norms of his time.
Shah concluded by emphasizing that today’s India does not require citizens to seek martyrdom, but rather to lead lives that reflect Savarkar’s values and aspirations for a prosperous nation. He encouraged the youth to pursue their paths with the spirit of Savarkar, noting that a collective effort could lead to the realization of a great and secure India by 2047, marking a century of independence.
