Air Quality Commission Inspects Gurugram’s Road Dust Conditions
The Commission for Air Quality Management in the National Capital Region (NCR) conducted an extensive inspection in Gurugram on December 26, 2025. The initiative aimed to evaluate road-cleaning and sweeping operations managed by the Municipal Corporation Gurugram (MCG), assessing compliance with dust mitigation measures under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP).
To support this effort, 17 inspection teams, including 15 from the Haryana State Pollution Control Board (HSPCB) and 2 from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), scrutinized 125 road stretches controlled by the MCG. The collected data included geo-tagged and time-stamped photographs, which were compiled into a comprehensive inspection report.
Inspection Findings Reveal Major Dust Accumulation
The results of the inspection were concerning. Of the 125 inspected road stretches, 34 showed high levels of visible dust, while 58 were categorized as having moderate dust levels. Only 4 stretches were recorded with no visible dust. The areas with significant dust often also had substantial amounts of municipal solid waste (MSW) and construction and demolition (C&D) waste, alongside instances of open burning.
Various wards and sectors in Gurugram, including residential areas and main roads, presented ongoing issues with dust accumulation and illegal dumping of waste. The additional problem of open burning further intensified the dust situation, signifying an alarming need for immediate corrective actions and better oversight from relevant authorities.
Call for Enhanced Road Maintenance Strategies
The Commission stressed that the inspection results highlight a pressing need for MCG to bolster its operational efficiency. This includes ensuring regular mechanical cleaning, timely disposal of collected dust and waste, active water spraying, and preventing open burning. Such actions are essential for noticeable improvement in road conditions and to inhibit further dust and waste accumulation.
The Commission also reiterated its commitment to ongoing monitoring and enforcement under ‘Operation Clean Air.’ Regular inspections across the NCR will continue to ensure compliance with statutory directives aimed at dust mitigation and curbing open burning. The Commission is working diligently to achieve clean, green, and dust-free roadways in the region.
