AI to Revolutionize Healthcare, Says Union Minister

In a significant address at the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Pharma & Life Sciences Summit 2025, Dr. Jitendra Singh, the Union Minister of State for Science & Technology, highlighted the crucial role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in transforming the healthcare and pharmaceuticals sectors. He emphasized the government’s commitment to collaborating with the private sector for innovation in biotechnology and gene therapy projects.
Dr. Singh noted that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the government is proactively engaging with industry players, fostering a unified approach that benefits both public and private sectors. AI, he asserted, is not merely an option; it is essential for advancements in diagnostics, drug discovery, and healthcare delivery. However, he stressed that the implementation of AI must prioritize human-centric approaches. He stated, “The real challenge is how effectively we integrate AI in a hybrid model that balances technology with human empathy.”
The Minister illustrated the transformative impact of AI in healthcare, pointing to AI-based diagnostic models that have significantly reduced the time required for culture testing from several days to mere minutes. Additionally, he highlighted telemedicine initiatives powered by AI that are expanding medical services into remote villages, thereby enhancing patient trust and health outcomes.
As part of India’s growing scientific and industrial capabilities, Dr. Singh revealed that the government is actively partnering with private firms in pioneering domains like gene therapy, biotechnology, and vaccine production. He mentioned ongoing initiatives by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) that focus on developing indigenous solutions, including synthetic antibiotics, DNA and HPV vaccines, and advancements in bio-manufacturing.
Encouraging industry leaders to engage with the government’s newly launched ₹1 lakh crore Research and Development (R&D) Fund, Dr. Singh noted that this initiative supports deep-tech projects across various sectors, including health and agriculture. He remarked, “For the first time, the government is financing private companies for innovation — marking a paradigm shift in India’s R&D ecosystem.”
Moreover, the Minister commended India’s shift from being an importer of medical technologies to becoming an exporter of preventive healthcare solutions. He pointed out the country’s expanding global presence in vaccines, biosimilars, and cost-effective medical devices, saying, “We are now producing high-quality, cost-effective health technologies that are finding markets across the world.”
