AI Innovations Set to Transform India’s Judicial System
The Indian judicial system is on the verge of a technological revolution, thanks to the ongoing eCourts Mission Mode Project. This initiative, led by the Department of Justice and in collaboration with the eCommittee of the Supreme Court of India, aims to integrate emerging technologies into the legal framework. In its Phase-III, the project has allocated ₹53.57 crore specifically for advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) to boost judicial efficiency.
The eCommittee shared that an innovative AI tool, the Legal Research Analysis Assistant (LegRAA), has been crafted by the Artificial Intelligence Division of NIC and the Centre of Excellence for eCourts (CoEE). This tool is designed to support judges by facilitating legal research and document analysis, streamlining their workflow. Another significant development is Digital Courts 2.1, an integrated digital case management platform also created by the CoEE in Pune. This platform simplifies access to case-related information and incorporates AI features like voice-to-text transcription and translation, assisting judges and judicial officers in drafting orders and judgments efficiently.
Currently, both LegRAA and Digital Courts 2.1 are undergoing pilot testing, marking a promising step forward in modernizing India’s court systems. The operational framework guiding the implementation and future usage of these AI solutions has been established in accordance with the Rules of Business and policies set forth by the Supreme Court and the respective High Courts.
This update on the project was provided by Shri Arjun Ram Meghwal, the Minister of State (Independent Charge) for the Ministry of Law and Justice and Minister of State in the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs, during a recent session in Lok Sabha where he responded to queries regarding technological advancements in the judiciary. The government’s commitment to enhancing the judicial process through the integration of AI solutions reflects a significant stride towards a more efficient and accessible legal system in India.
