Agricultural Area Sown Shows Mixed Trends for 2026
Recent data from agricultural reports reveals fluctuating trends in the area sown for key crops, highlighting various shifts compared to previous years. The total area of 49.87 lakh hectares sown thus far in the current year 2026 shows a decrease of 2.47 lakh hectares when compared to the normal summer area estimate of 75.37 lakh hectares. This study illustrates the complex dynamics of crop production and farming trends during the summer months.
Rice and Pulses: A Closer Look
Rice remains a staple crop, with a normal summer area of 31.49 lakh hectares and a final summer area expected at 33.28 lakh hectares for 2025. However, sown area this year stands at only 28.50 lakh hectares, representing a reduction of 2.19 lakh hectares compared to the previous year’s corresponding period.
Pulses have displayed more positive results, with their area sown reaching 6.06 lakh hectares, up from 5.60 lakh hectares last year. This figure includes a notable increase in both green and black gram, which have risen to 3.91 lakh hectares and 1.90 lakh hectares, respectively.
Coarse Cereals and Oilseeds
The category of Shree Anna, which includes coarse cereals, has witnessed a decline, with sown areas for 2026 dropping to 9.34 lakh hectares from last year’s 9.71 lakh hectares. Maize accounts for a significant part of this category with a current area of 6.36 lakh hectares, but it has decreased as well.
Similarly, the oilseeds sector faces challenges. The current sown area is 5.97 lakh hectares, down from 6.34 lakh hectares last year, reflecting a broader trend of mixed agricultural performance.
Overall Agriculture Landscape
Summarizing the agricultural landscape, the total area for 2026 at 49.87 lakh hectares shows considerable variation across different crop categories. While some crops, particularly pulses, have expanded, others, such as rice and certain coarse cereals, are experiencing setbacks. Stakeholders remain vigilant as these trends evolve, taking into account climate, market, and agricultural practices that may dictate future outcomes.
