Survivor’s Struggle with Loss
Viswashkumar Ramesh’s emotional journey began with the harrowing experience of the crash, which occurred shortly after take-off in June. While he managed to escape with seemingly minor injuries, the loss of his brother has left an indelible mark on his life. Speaking from his home in Leicester, Ramesh revealed the toll the tragedy has taken on his mental health. He has been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and struggles to communicate with his wife and four-year-old son. “Now I’m alone. I just sit in my room alone,” he shared, highlighting the isolation he feels in the wake of his brother’s death.
The crash, which resulted in the deaths of 169 Indian nationals and 52 Britons, has left Ramesh grappling with not only emotional pain but also physical injuries. He described the difficulty of moving around due to persistent pain in his leg, shoulder, knee, and back. His family, too, is suffering; Ramesh’s mother has reportedly been unable to cope with the loss, spending her days in silence outside their home.

The Boeing 787 flight went down in flames shortly after take-off, a scene captured in shocking videos that circulated widely. Ramesh recounted the moment he unbuckled himself and crawled out of the wreckage, a feat that many consider miraculous. He later met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi while receiving treatment for his injuries. The preliminary investigation into the crash indicated that fuel supply to the engines was cut off mere seconds after take-off, prompting an ongoing inquiry into the incident.
Since returning to the UK, Ramesh’s life has been marked by a profound sense of loss and trauma. He has not received any medical treatment for his PTSD since his return, and his advisers have expressed concern over his well-being. They described him as feeling “lost and broken,” emphasizing the long road to recovery that lies ahead. Ramesh’s family has also faced financial difficulties, as their fishing business in India has collapsed since the tragedy.
Calls for Support from Air India
In light of the ongoing struggles faced by Ramesh and his family, there have been calls for Air India to provide more substantial support. The airline has offered an interim compensation payment of £21,500, which Ramesh’s advisers claim is insufficient to address his immediate needs. They have attempted to arrange meetings with Air India executives on multiple occasions, but these requests have reportedly been ignored or declined.
Radd Seiger, a spokesman for Ramesh’s family, emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “The people who should be sitting here today are the executives of Air India.” He urged the airline to engage directly with the victims’ families to understand their needs and alleviate their suffering. In response, Air India has stated that senior leaders from the parent company have been visiting affected families to express condolences and that they are open to further discussions.
