New Discoveries Unveiled from Supergiant Star Wd1-9

In a groundbreaking study, astronomers utilizing NASA’s Chandra X-Ray Observatory have made significant strides in understanding the supergiant star Wd1-9, located 13,800 light years from Earth. This rare B-type star, part of the Westerlund 1 cluster, has been the focus of extensive research due to its unique characteristics and the mysteries surrounding its nature. The recent findings, published on July 23, 2025, shed light on the star’s emission spectrum and its potential classification, revealing new insights into its behavior and composition.

Wd1-9: What is this Supergiant B Star?

Wd1-9 is classified as a supergiant B (e) star within the Westerlund 1 cluster, recognized as the brightest radio source in this region. Despite previous studies conducted at various wavelengths, the true nature of Wd1-9 has remained elusive, primarily due to its obscured view behind a cloud of dust. Initial research has suggested that it could either be a cool hypergiant or part of an interacting binary system. To clarify these uncertainties, a team led by Konstantina Anastasopolou from the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics employed the Chandra Observatory for a more in-depth investigation. Their analysis revealed a rich emission-line spectrum, although no photospheric features were detected, indicating the complexity of this celestial body.

What did the Astronomers Find?

The observations made by Chandra provided crucial insights into Wd1-9’s behavior, particularly its long-term X-ray variability. The research team identified an orbital period characterized by a 14-day periodic signal, marking the first determination of such a period for this star. This discovery is significant as it enhances the understanding of Wd1-9’s dynamics. Furthermore, the astronomers detected strong emission lines from elements such as silicon, sulfur, and argon, with the iron emission line at 6.7 keV being identified for the first time. These findings contribute to the growing body of knowledge regarding the star’s composition and behavior, offering a clearer picture of its physical properties.
