Honoring Valor: Indian Coast Guard Medals Ceremony
On February 25, 2025, a significant event unfolded at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi. Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh presided over the 18th Indian Coast Guard (ICG) Investiture Ceremony. During this ceremony, he awarded gallantry, distinguished service, and meritorious service medals to 32 personnel of the ICG. This recognition highlights the bravery and dedication of these individuals who serve in challenging maritime conditions. The awards included six President’s Tatrakshak Medals for Distinguished Service, 11 Tatrakshak Medals for Gallantry, and 15 Tatrakshak Medals for Meritorious Service, covering the years 2022, 2023, and 2024.

During the ceremony, Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh emphasized the importance of these medals. He described them as symbols of bravery, perseverance, and unwavering commitment to the nation. The personnel recognized at the event have shown exceptional dedication to their duties, which include ensuring coastal security, conducting rescue operations, and participating in international exercises. The Role of the Indian Coast Guard
Shri Rajnath Singh highlighted the strategic importance of the Indian Coast Guard in safeguarding the nation’s maritime borders. With India surrounded by sea on three sides, the ICG faces numerous threats, including piracy, terrorism, and illegal fishing. The Raksha Mantri pointed out that while the Armed Forces handle conventional warfare, the ICG is essential in addressing these unconventional threats.
In the past year, the ICG has made significant strides in maritime safety and security. They apprehended 14 boats and 115 pirates, along with a major drug seizure valued at approximately Rs 37,000 crore. Additionally, the ICG has saved 169 lives through various rescue operations and provided medical assistance to 29 seriously injured individuals. These achievements reflect the ICG’s commitment to national security and its effectiveness in responding to maritime challenges.
Commitment to Modernization and Technology
The Raksha Mantri also discussed the government’s commitment to enhancing the capabilities of the Indian Coast Guard. He announced a substantial budget allocation of Rs 9,676.70 crore for the Financial Year 2025-26, marking a 26.50% increase from the previous year. This funding will support the modernization of the ICG, including the procurement of new vessels and advanced technology.
Shri Rajnath Singh mentioned the approval for 14 Fast Patrol Vessels, six Air Cushion Vehicles, and various other boats to strengthen the ICG’s operational capabilities. He also acknowledged the ICG’s focus on technological advancements, particularly the foundation of the Digital Coast Guard project. These initiatives aim to equip the ICG to effectively handle both conventional and unconventional threats, ensuring the security of India’s maritime borders.
Prior to the ceremony, the Raksha Mantri inspected the Ceremonial Guard of Honour, underscoring the significance of the occasion. The event concluded with awardees and their families interacting with Shri Rajnath Singh, celebrating their achievements and contributions to the nation. The presence of senior officials from the ICG and the Ministry of Defence further highlighted the importance of this ceremony in recognizing the valor and dedication of the Indian Coast Guard personnel.
