Grok 3 AI Models Launch by xAI

On Monday, xAI unveiled its latest family of artificial intelligence models, the Grok 3 series. This new generation follows the Grok 2 models and promises significant advancements in capabilities. The announcement took place during a live event hosted by xAI engineers and the company’s owner, Elon Musk. The Grok 3 series includes several large language models (LLMs) with varying parameter sizes and reasoning-based variants. Notably, the new models come equipped with innovative features like DeepSearch and a voice mode. Additionally, xAI introduced a new subscription tier called SuperGrok, which offers enhanced access to features and higher rate limits.
Grok 3 AI Models Unveiled by xAI
Elon Musk led a live stream on X, formerly known as Twitter, to showcase the capabilities of the Grok 3 models. He described Grok 3 as โan order of magnitude more capable than Grok 2.โ Musk emphasized the companyโs commitment to building a robust infrastructure, revealing that xAI constructed a new data center specifically for pre-training the LLMs. Within just 122 days, the first 100,000 GPUs were operational, and the capacity was doubled in the following 92 days.
The Grok 3 family consists of several models, including Grok 3, Grok 3 mini, Grok 3 Reasoning, and Grok 3 mini Reasoning. While some models are already available, others remain in the beta phase. Musk noted that certain chain-of-thought (CoT) steps would be obscured in the reasoning models to prevent distillation, a process where synthetic data from one AI model is used to train another smaller model. This approach aims to enhance the integrity and performance of the Grok 3 series.
Innovative Features: DeepSearch and Voice Mode
The Grok 3 models introduce two exciting features: DeepSearch and a voice mode. DeepSearch is xAI’s answer to the Deep Research feature recently launched by competitors like OpenAI and Google. This tool scours the Internet and the X platform to analyze information when faced with complex queries. It generates comprehensive reports, making it easier for users to access detailed insights.
Additionally, the voice mode will allow the AI to respond to queries verbally, enhancing user interaction. However, this feature will not be available at launch. Musk indicated that the voice mode could be rolled out within a week after the initial launch. These features aim to make the Grok 3 models more versatile and user-friendly, catering to a wider range of applications.
Performance Benchmarks and Subscription Options
In terms of performance, xAI claims that Grok 3 surpasses GPT-4o on several benchmarks, including the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME) and Graduate-Level Google-Proof Q&A (GPQA). Internal testing also suggests that Grok 3 achieves higher scores than competitors like Claude 3.5 Sonnet, DeepSeek-V3, and Gemini-2 Pro. Notably, the Grok 3 reasoning models reportedly outperform OpenAI’s o3 mini model, showcasing the advancements made in this new series.
Alongside the new models, xAI introduced the SuperGrok subscription tier. While pricing details remain undisclosed, this tier promises features such as DeepSearch, a reasoning mode, higher image generation limits, and early access to new functionalities. Subscribers to X Premium Plus will gain access to Grok 3, although some features will not be available at this tier. Musk also announced plans to open-source the last version of the AI model once Grok 3 is fully rolled out and stable, potentially taking a few months. This commitment to transparency reflects xAI’s dedication to fostering innovation in the AI community.
