WAVES Animation Filmmakers Competition Launches
The WAVES – International Animation Filmmakers Competition (AFC) has made its debut as a transformative initiative in the animation industry. Launched on September 8, 2024, during the World Audio Visual Entertainment Summit (WAVES), this competition aims to create a global platform for creators in animation, visual effects (VFX), augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and virtual production. The AFC has quickly gained recognition among participants and industry leaders, establishing itself as a premier destination for innovative storytelling and technological advancement.
A Historic Collaboration
The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (I&B) of India has partnered with Dancing Atoms to organize the Animation Filmmakers Competition. This collaboration marks a significant milestone in India’s creative landscape, ushering in a new era for the country’s animation and visual effects sector. The initiative is part of the “Create in India” campaign, which aims to promote creativity and innovation in various fields.
The AFC has attracted considerable attention since its inception, with over 1,200 registrations and more than 400 creative submissions from participants across 15 countries. This overwhelming response underscores the competition’s potential to foster a vibrant community of storytellers and creators. By providing a platform for diverse voices, the AFC aims to elevate the quality of animation and storytelling in India and beyond.
Empowering Creators Through Education
At the heart of the AFC is its commitment to empowering participants. The competition offers a range of educational opportunities designed to help creators refine their skills and bring their stories to life. Participants can engage in online masterclasses led by industry experts such as Pilar Alessandra, Sergio Pablos, and Saraswathi Buyyala. These sessions cover essential topics, including creative pitching, personal development, and effective networking.
In addition to online learning, the AFC hosts in-person and hybrid workshops at premier institutions across India. These workshops focus on vital skills necessary for success in the evolving creative economy. Notable sessions have taken place at institutions like IIT Hyderabad, JNAFAU Hyderabad, and IIMC Delhi, where participants have learned how to navigate the global animation landscape and explore transmedia storytelling. By fostering an environment where creativity meets opportunity, the AFC aims to equip storytellers with the tools they need to thrive in the competitive animation industry.
Global Networking and Future Opportunities
The AFC has made significant strides in expanding its global presence. By participating in prestigious events both domestically and internationally, the competition has created invaluable networking opportunities for its participants. Notable events in India include Comic Con Hyderabad, the VFX Summit, and IFFI Goa. On the international stage, the AFC has showcased its vision at events such as the Animation World Summit in Los Angeles and MIPCOM in Cannes.
As the competition progresses, over 75 shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend the WAVES Summit 2025. These selected creators will gain access to exclusive masterclasses featuring renowned industry figures, including Oscar-winning director Peter Ramsey and celebrated producer Guneet Monga. This phase of the competition aims to provide participants with insights and tools to refine their projects and pitch them effectively to leading producers and OTT platforms. By bridging the gap between ideas and impactful projects, the AFC is creating unparalleled opportunities for creators to collaborate with global entertainment giants.
Promoting Diversity and Empowering Women
Dancing Atoms, led by Saraswathi Buyyala, is dedicated to promoting diversity and empowering women within the animation and AVGC sectors. Through targeted initiatives, the studio supports women creators, providing them with platforms to showcase their talents and contribute meaningfully to the industry. The WAVES AFC competition proudly features numerous talented women participants whose creative works are reshaping storytelling norms.
By fostering an inclusive environment, the AFC not only enhances the quality of storytelling but also ensures that diverse perspectives are represented in the animation industry. This commitment to diversity is crucial for the growth and evolution of the creative landscape, as it allows for a richer tapestry of narratives that resonate with audiences worldwide.
